I'm about 200 lbs and want to upgrade the crank so It won't bend and rub against other parts and so the pedal arm won't fall off. How do I go about finding what new crankset will be compatible with my bike? I also need to replace the brakes on this bike because they take forever to stop, but I'm on a pretty tight budget and don't want to drop lots of money into this bike. I would love to have this bike be my commuter but i've been told by many people that I shouldn't drop $$$ into it.

here's some pictures, if there's anyway you could tell me what I need to do to figure out what kind of crank I'd need to replace the current one with that'd be amazing, thanks.

Vintage Fuji Suncrest? Any Fuji experts willing to lend a hand in identifying the Fuji frame I took delivery on today?

It's an interesting challenge. The basic information is:
Fuji Suncrest, 22 inches, Tourquoise
Frame is CroMo, Tig Brazed. Top, Head and downubes are 1.25" in diameter
Seat Tube is 1.125
FD & RD are Shimano Deore
Crank is Sakae SX with ramps and guides to facilitate the indexing
Bar mounted Thumb shifters are indexed, and are seperate from grips/levers
Grips and Brake levers are Shimano unit
Front Brakes are Shimano Cantilevers, but much smaller than the Altus
Rear Brakes are Shimano Cantilevers also, and may be U brake type and mount under the BB
The Stem appears to have a vinyl coating in a contrasting color, though it may just be painted

Normally I would attribute the bar shifters to the early 80s, but the fact that they are indexed would seem to pull it forward a bit. The TIG welding of Cro Mo, in my understanding, would bring it serveral years forward. Fuji was an innovative manufacturer, but these incongruities create a mystery for me in any case.

The issues I need assistance with are 1) Approximate date of manufacture; and 2) The number of freewheel cogs it came with. Or, you may be able to share sources to this information.

Hello all,

Last weekend I purchased a Peugeot PA 10E for all of seven dollars at a local yard sale.

The bike is pretty, with the usual white paint and many decals, Brooks saddle, and beautiful details so characteristic of these French bikes. It worked in the sense that you could get on and peddle it but nothing was right. It has rust, all the cables are frayed, the cable housings are ready to meet their maker, the wheels are completely out of true, brake levers are bent from an accident, and the paint is badly chipped all over. The real reason I'm taking on this bike is because it was never really ridden. It has the original Mafac brake pads, worn only because of the uneven wear from the wobble in the wheels, and it has the original tires that are dry-rotted to pieces. I think this bike deserves to be ridden because it apparently never really was and so I'm trying to restore it generally mechanically and save the cosmetics from complete destruction by rust.

At the moment, I'm working on the rust and have been able to shine a lot of the pretty pieces on the bike. But now I'm stuck because I want to remove the freewheel on the rear wheel and I cannot find the appropriate tool. It is a Simplex design from 1974 (I believe) and I would like to be able to remove the freewheel, the cassette, shine up the HUGE chain guard, and put everything back together. So, my question is, can anyone point me towards a freewheel removal tool for this particular bike. I know they sold a gajillion of them so there must be a tool floating around somewhere.

Thanks!

The entire frame, stays and fork appear to have dull chrome plating under the original paint, so I thought the tubes might be butted Tange also.

I'm about to build up a wheel with a NOS 1980s Mavic G 40 rim (27 inch). According to Spocalc and other tables I've consulted, it's said to have an ERD of 620. By my repeated measurements at different points, it's more like 625. For a 4-cross wheel, that makes the difference between 306 or 308 spokes, more or less.
That seems like a lot of variation to me. Is that typical? If so, I can see why people recommend measuring rather than relying on the published ERD. And what would account for a full 5 mm of difference from the normal figure? Is it a matter of who was running the rim machine at the Mavic factory that day, how accurately the machinery was calibrated, or what?
I'm not a master wheel builder, but I'm not a complete novice, either. I've built maybe a half-dozen wheels over the past few years. In fact, relying on Spocalc's ERD numbers has screwed me up before. That's why I measured this time.

A year after its purchase, and after a winter of (ab)use in all weathers, the Peugeot has had a proper restoration and got its first run-out today.
Itīs a 1995 Competition 500, unusually with Columbus Thron Custom tubing.
And it is an absolutely fantastic ride, I am beyond delighted.

The principal upgrades include:
- 9-speed Shimano STI (Tiagra brake shifters, Tiagra cassette, Sora rear mech, 105 front mech and Biopace crank)
- Carbon front fork (CLT 1" fork, cheapy off eBay) and threadless headset
- SRAM 9-speed chain
- Mavic Cosmic Expert wheelset (€68 off eBay), Schwalbe Blizzard 25mm tyres with latex tubes.

The fork will be cut down a bit more at some point.

The mishmash of Shimano components on the drivetrain work absolutely flawlessly.

So here are some before and after pictures. All comments gratefully received, as I am learning as I go.

Loads of crud on the front end on pickup:

Looking a bit better now:

The original RSX front mech was rusted beyond salvage:

So a newish 105 one was aquired:

The whole fork, headset and front brake was a crudfest:

But it cleaned up OK:

Amazingly the original RSX rear mech worked perfectly through the winter, and has been cleaned up and is in the parts bin, but a new Sora one was only €10 so I put that on:

One shot of it the day it arrived:

And today along the River Main. I was pleased to find bottle cages in approxiamtely the correct colour on eBay. The bike has lost a few of its decals, as I thought they looked rubbish, and were scratched up anyway.

The new front end:

Hope you enjoyed looking.
It will probably get Keo Look pedals at some point, but itīs nice to have one race bike I can just jump on in normal shoes.
The seat post is still stuck - fortuitously at my height.
The Selle San Marco was a cheapy from eBay (€3) and is spectacularly uncomfortable so a Brooks B17 will probably go on too.
