And the flat ride is the one you have to do. It would be cheating to take credit for gravity's work. This you have to earn yourself. And you can do it!
And then after you get the ticket.... and I'll assume appear in mayors court. Explain that you understood the lawmakers had exempted bicycles from speeding laws.... since bicycles are EXEMPT from the speedometer requirement. And why else would bikes be exempt from speedometers... if they weren't also exempt from strict adherence to the speed limit posted for those vehicles... that are required to have speedometers.

Interesting. I've not read our vehicle code in enough detail, but it's possible that by riding to the right of the fogline, you may not be in the "roadway," and subject to a citation. Hmmm. If so, that would be an oversight ... it's not like the LEOs are going to look the other way if they see an auto speeding on the shoulder at 80 MPH.

Since speedometers are not required equipment on bicycles, I've often wondered how a speeding ticket could be enforced against a bicyclist, unless they were passing other traffic or riding dangerously.

If the OP really wants a speeding ticket on his bike, he needs to get friendly with a local LEO, and convince his new friend to help him out. Then find a nice spot with a low MPH, have him scope you and write the ticket. Make sure your friendly cop won't show up in court, and the ticket will likely be dismissed. Then go frame your copy and be happy!

I didn't actually get a ticket, but I got pulled over for a warning about 35 years ago, in a 55 MPH zone. It was descending Rabbit Ears Pass into Steamboat Springs, CO, with 35 pounds of loaded panniers on a cross-country ride. The cop pulled over the group of 4 of us because he wanted us to slow down, he thought we were going to get ourselves killed.

If I were of a mind to document my performance, I'd have a friend follow me in a car and take a picture as I pass one of those radar trailers that display your speed.

For a while, I was trying to get a ticket in town, where the speed limit is 25 KPH and I was going 40+ (notice, I said KPH, not MPH) - the police would just wave when I went by. I stopped it when a taxi driver told my wife he saw me flying by with my WHITE HAIR STREAMING BEHIND ME!!! I decided I probably looked pretty silly.

Way back in 1976, I was just home from a tour around Europe. I bought a Falcon road bike in England and used that for my tour. I saw the the speed trap ahead so I poured it on. 61kmh in a 50kmh zone. I was pulled over, given a lecture about bikes having to follow the rules like cars and a $35 ticket. The road was flat but I had a nice tail wind. Too bad I didn't make a copy of the ticket.

I was bombing down the bike path and had 4 young ladies on bikes coming toward me. They quickly snapped into single file and were pointing at me with big grins as I zipped by at 27mph. I figured it was my white goatee and black sunglasses.

Tickets for exceeding the speed limit are traditionally given at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada. To get one you just need to go over 70 mph on the flats for 200 m.

A school zone we ride through during this section of Thursday's ride. Stopping video at 32 seconds reveals local limit that was slightly exceeded. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvha...m-upload_owner Didn't see the lights flashing so all's well. Into a head cross wind until turn.
Couldn't make this ride but section was 17 miles into first part of the ride. Ages of riders in sequence, 44, 57, 53, 74, 67.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse... Isn't that what the police say? The police will be happy to provide a record of your speed.

I passed a school today with a posted limit of 20mph. I looked up and there was one of those "radar" signs with "your speed is" and in big red numbers was 26mph.
Granted I had a good tail wind, but it made me laugh.

I hope that New York isn't like Florida about the fines, in school and construction zones, no smiles would be present when you got the ticket and saw what you owed. And, the speed sensor/display signs used in our area, I ride past 2 daily, won't pick up a bicycle, its too small a signature to give a reading. I think our sensor signs may be microwave, not the "X" or "K" band type, not a stealth guy, did avionics not radar stuff.
But, if you speed through a school zone, during posted limit times, no matter what you are on you get a ticket if you get caught. We had some kids killed a while back and its serious stuff here, the concrete truck speeding and swerving around the cars, and into the little girl, was gruesome. I came up on that one on the way home from work at the air station. Stopped school buses are the same enforcement, too.

School Zone speed limits are only in effect when the lights are flashing. And really? Speeding in a 15 mph zone? That's not a bragging point unless you're riding a Big Wheel(tm).
