Watching the Team Time Trials highlights the 5 riders in the group and the 5th rider sometimes just hanging on.

Not only are they fast think of the hours in the saddle they must endure to keep at the elite level. I believe I read somewhere that the pros log 25,000 + miles per year in races and training.

With the Time Bonuses for winning, 2nd, 3rd Etc. even using the usual math of averages is a Bit misleading .

I'm amazed at the speeds that are given out by the TDF announcers but I never really concern myself with them as I'll never reach half of what the pro's do.

Not an average speed, but Cavendish posted some pics of his power meter head screen yesterday, during the descent from Col de Tourmalet, it was 101+kph. that's 62+ mph on the descent and he wasn't the quickest down it either.

I have gone to several world class cycling events. On the level it is not unusual for speeds to be in the low 30s. One down hill section of the Coors Classic, there were reports of speeds over 50mph!

Good thing MLB and the NFL are so unaffected by performance enhancing substances.

Cycling has had a long history of substance abuse, however no amount of EPO or steroids are substitutes for the long years of big miles, hard training and actual race experience it takes to make a competent bike racer. Try beating the time of your local Juniors who are quite unlikely to be hopped up by Dr. Conconi in a simple TT to get a feel for the speed/pain of the sport at it's introductory level.
