Greetings fellow 50+ers,

I just did something that I hadn’t done my entire life. I know it’s the last thing a 59-year-old heart attack survivor (incurred at age 53) should do, but I was starving from not eating since breakfast and it sounded like a great idea. So, what did I eat?

I ate an entire pound of bacon and 6 eggs “over easy” that I cooked in puddles of bacon grease! How was it? Well, if I die before the night is through I’ll consider it an awesome last meal! I suppose it’s good thing that I rode a hilly 94-mile ride in the sweltering heat and humidity just days prior because I can afford to consume a bit of excess after that sweat-fest.

I’d been refraining from overindulgence for the last 4+ years that I’ve been bicycling and even though I “love the groceries,” bicycling has made it fairly easy for me to refrain. I typically haven’t felt like eating all that much ever since I commenced bicycling. If I ate like this just once every 4+ years, I can’t see it being overly hurtful to the old ticker.

I love bacon. My ultimate was a one lb blt sandwich. When it came, the bacon was more than two inches thick. I asked the waiter and he said the one pound was the cooked weight!

I went in for a pretty extensive bio metric screening with a cycling coach a few months age (long story). At the end, he suggested that I needed to up my fat intake, and used as examples avocados and bacon. I made him write it down, so I could take it home to my wife. That is happy ending stuff. There are several pounds in my frig at all times now.

years ago, i worked with a dietician professor. She told me that back in the 50's and earlier the U.S. didn't have heart disease issues. what changed? processed foods changed our diets.

If we eat whole foods in moderation, we are golden.... or so they say..

and bacon is whole food.... actually it deserves its own special food group.

My wife made it a tradition, that when we are expecting a big snow, she buys a dozen eggs and a pound of bacon. While i'm shoveling she cooks the bacon to a crispy brown, drains off most of the grease and then scrambles the eggs and cooks it in the bacon grease.

After shoveling i come back into the house to this incredible smell. Trust me... there's nothing left.

I used to be able to eat 6 eggs at once. No more. But once or twice a week I'll have 3 eggs scrambled in bacon grease of course with the bacon for supper. Only 3 or 4 slices for me thank you.

Does it make a difference if the bacon is cooked to a crisp rather than with the soft fatty kind?

My daughter turned vegetarian about 20 years ago.

She says the only meat she could be tempted to eat would be a bacon sandwich.

Spam wrapped in bacon then deep fried. Thought a TV food program said it was huge in Hawaii.

I used to love bacon, not anymore. Take a bite and YUCK! You-all can eat my ration.

Haha...scrapple was a family dietary staple when I was a kid in eastern PA. Better for us than bacon my mom believed.

I like bacon but a pound of it with six eggs sounds about as appetizing as eating 65 Nathan's hot dogs. (That's the record for their annual contest.) I like hot dogs, too.

Variety is the spice of life. My oldest daughter ordered a chocolate, bacon and peanut butter milkshake from Sonic for me about 3 years ago. It was........mere words can't describe the wonderful bacony goodness....
