Adventures in Stravaland
I had a nice ride this morning (Thursday is my day off), a little over 30 miles along a route that I do fairly often. Today, as usual, about 14 miles into the ride I stopped for a granola bar and a rest. I took out my phone to pause Strava and noticed that it claimed I had only done 9.8 miles, then I noticed that it also said I had only been riding 1 minute 10 seconds at an average speed of 488 mph!
I was kind of irritated that it had "cheated" me out of four or five miles, but I also figured that with an average speed of 488 mph there was bound to be a KOM for life in there somewhere, so I quickly saved the ride. Now my feed tells me that I have a ride of 0 miles at an average of 0 mph. Dang!

I have this little plastic electrical box on my handlebars that has buttons. When I press the buttons it shows me mileage and average speed. It has this wire going to it. It seems pretty accurate. You may want to look into one of these.

Somebody noted a recent update that changed the start buttons. Perhaps you got whammied by the updates.
I suppose I've been using Strava for fun a bit. I have tried a few KOM runs, so it would be frustrating to do some spectacular run, and then get it denied.
If I have a phone on the bar mount, I can watch it. If it is packed in the bag somewhere, then it is all a leap of faith whether it is in fact recording.

One time my GPS thought I was someplace in Africa - and then I got to my front door in two seconds, flat and fast.
