Not even once. But then there are a lot of way more popular movies I've never seen either... like not a single Star Wars movie!

Probably six or seven times. I worked at Bikecology in Santa Monica when it was premiered so all of us workers got free passes. It was somewhere in Westwood as I recall. Got a "Breaking Away" T-Shirt and cycling cap (both long gone) but it was excellent seeing the movie in a theater full of happy cyclists.

I remember showing it to my kids sometime in the mid-eighties too. We have it on DVD and it's fun to watch occasionally.

Bought my MASI Gran Criterium in '82 (it's a '75) but it's a California MASI and not a real Italian one. It was my main road bike (Campagnolo Super Record) all through the 80's and into the '90's. In 2002 I converted it to fixed gear and still ride it occasionally.

3 or 4 times.
I first saw it August 17, 1979. I had just finished a cross country tour from San Francisco to Washington DC. I and my touring companion went to see the movie as part of our celebration. I also was racing in USCF and knew through Velonews that John Vande Velde and Peter Lazzare(sp) had been involved in a film project. I was pretty excited to see it, up until then there hadn't been a modern era film featuring bicycle racing other than the foreign films at the art theaters.

I liked America Flyers better. mostly because Rae Dawn Chong was so hot!

Don't know how many times I have seen the movie. At least 6 times, maybe more. Watched it with my wife the other night. The movie holds up really well. I am not usually a fan of feel good movies, but this one has heart, and I love the vintage bikes and vintage kit.

I've never watched it. Thanks to Loky1179, now I've seen the infamous drafting-a-semi scene.

Masi? He rode a Masi? After the @#$% team stuck his pump into his spokes, he ended up on an AMF, right? I never understood the relationship betweeen him riding an AMF and AMF being the main sponsor of the final race. Then again, it's been ten years since I've seen it.

Yeah - Masi... that was his main bike. Two were used in the movie, plus a fake one for the pump scene.
Check out this photo essay of that iconic event:

And EVERYBODY rode AMF Roadmasters in the Little 500... that was the idea, all the bikes were the same, provided by the organizer.

I watch it (and a few other cycling movies) every winter. I have a home theater and a decent DVD/BR collection. The cycling movies, a trainer, occasional winter ride, project bikes, and cycling gear shopping.... gets me through the winter months.

Oh.., so both his bikes were "Masis"? (Shows how much I remember...)
Cool! I guess I got confused. I thought he had to ride some piece of junk
after the crash.

No. In the story, he had one Masi, crashed it in the Cinzano road race, got a ride home from Mike. Two identical Masis and one fake Masi were used in the movie to represent one single bike in the story.

In the Little 500 everyone rides a bike provided to them... because of anti-Cutter sentiment he was given a junky one but he fixed it up before the race.

Last year the Little 500 was televised, I could only catch the women's race. What a bunch of chaos it can be.

Believe it or not!

ETA: found the vid. The crash at 1hr 35min is crazy. Watch the rider in pink jersey. On my bigscreen tv you could see her talking to another rider as she jammed her bike where it didnt fit. Bad wreck.

Looked like the girl in the pink was following the girl in the yellow, when the girl in the orange cut her off.

Well.., they say that baseball is a game of inches. So, too, is competitive cycling.

You all should read through DiabloScott's tribute site, it is first rate stuff. As many times as I have watched the movie, I learned a lot from his information in the site. BF had a member that was one of the riding "consultants" here for a few years, but they managed to get banned. That movie is the reason you cannot afford to buy any vintage Masi now, especially a red one with Campag components, even if its not the correct year or group on it. But I still love watching it. And, I love that Iteye food anyway.
