not a flat but

I pulled my trusty old c-dale off of the rack for today's ride and, as always, went to pump up the tires. I use tubes with presta valves and in doing the rear(of course) imagine my surprise when the nut broke off when I went to tighten it. Never have I had that happen before.

It wasn't a problem as I just grabbed my other road bike and wandered off for a short jaunt around town. It will be an annoyance when I go to change the tube as the rear wheel fits quite snugly and can be a pain to get on and off. I know its a minor issue in the greater scheme of things but still...!

Many inner tubes these days have removable valve cores. If/when this happens, you can simply replace the core. You can buy Presta valve cores separately or salvage them from old inner tubes.

In my 16 years of riding I've had that happen twice. Luckily it was always before I left home to go riding.

Indeed you can, I once commuted for a months on a tube with a broken-off valve stem. Worked just fine.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt and poster. As said, many manufacturers of tubes have removable cores in the valves. If I have a tube that was beyond being patched, the core gets robbed and put in a separate container for that purpose, on my work bench. Had to grab one several times, beats changing out tubes before going riding.

A pox on the ones that don't have the removable core, also.

I hadn't thought of pulling the valve stem. Duh! I'll give it a try can't break broken anymore than it is now.

This could happen to you!

I had my wife's bike in the work stand doing some minor adjustments, and heard this strange noise as the rear wheel rotated. I puzzled over it for much longer than I wanted to, before I realized what was going on. Her valve stem broke just the way you described, and I replaced it with one that I'd saved from another tube. However, parts of the damaged valve core were inside the tube, and would make that weird sound on every rotation as it bounced around inside the tube

I've converted all our tubes to those with removable valve cores, and always carry a couple of spare valve cores on long tours.

Lucky you. I've had it happen once, but that was enough. I was fifty miles from home, thirty miles from the nearest cell service, out of patches and on my last tube. Fun times ensued.

I have used tubes with broken valve stems as they are. The air pressure in the tubes was enough to keep them sealed for a ride. Just pumped them up before heading out. Had a commuter that I rode every day for a year with the front tube valve stem broken off. Weird, huh?

The tube should still work. I have 1 tube with a nut that is jammed. Works fine.
I don't see a need to change the tube if it holds air.

Actually tried that after reading your response but the rest of the valve promptly fell out. Not a problem as I had all ready changed the tube but good to keep in mind.
