LAST day of Employment
Some of you may have been following my posts starting back in late last year but today was my last day on the job after 42 years with the same company. I am able to leave under my own choosing plus I am provided a nice bridge of salary and insurance payments up until Medicare. No real financial concerns if I can keep the wife under control!!
I had customers I've worked with the last several years call me first thing this morning to wish me well. I had some others call me not long before I left at the end of the day to discuss some transitional affairs. Ugh.
I'm really excited about tomorrow and every day afterwards. A nice week long bike tour schedule for June with several locals. I'm planning on doing a cross country ride from Newport Oregon to Boston late summer early fall. First grandchild is scheduled to be here in July (a boy) so another somewhat immediate bonus to life after work.
I'm thinking walking 18 holes of golf in the mornings with riding later in the day as desired. Lots of house projects planned to get it ready to sell so we can move to**********? Do families still need 5 bedroom houses any more????
I'm been pushed in pulled in numerous directions by others the last several months just getting ready to be my own boss. I'm really ready for a long solo bike ride just to soak it all in.
Exciting times indeed.

Now there's a familiar sounding story.

Do you really get to be your own boss? I thought you said something about a wife in there.

Jealous. I venture in this forum now and then, but I don't belong. Next Tuesday will be 21 years where I'm at and I have 21 years to go. I'm exactly halfway there.
Congrats. I have many coworkers retiring in the next coming few weeks. All I hear all day long is how they're going to enjoy their time while I'm still slogging away, LOL.

A little envious, but happy for you. Hope you have a long and happy retirement.

Good for you, Joe! You have made it to the place where many of us just wish, or dream we can make it to. Enjoy the new life out there waiting for you and the wife.

...That's how I know my miles are likely to fall precipitously when I retire. Which is part of the reason I've pushed my retirement date out as far as possible. June 30, 2027 if all goes according to plan.
I previously replied to this thread on the Commuting Forum, "How to motivate myself to ride when I'll no longer be commuting to work?"...
Just yesterday a colleague asked me when I was going to retire. I suggested a number of years, adding, "I like my job, and it’s a convenient place (and distance) to bike to."

If I were to do a route that finished near Boston could you provide local knowledge on cycling around that area? I've visited and driven in the area a few times and I'd definitely need help on roads less traveled!!

Congrats, sounds like a good plan for the summer tour! From what I read, the touring bug can cause long term illness
