Recovering from appendicitis
Long story short. The first week I thought it was constipation. Did not feel any pain or the symptoms of appendicitis. It was on my visit to the second hospital after a CT scan it was discovered I had a ruptured appendix that my family doctor and the first hospital emergency had missed. So my second week was spent in the hospital with intravenous antibiotics. No operation required. Sent home during the third week with antibiotic pills. Doctor's orders was to take it easy, don't lift more than 10lbs until Oct 30. He was hesitant on cycle commuting. So when I returned to work the last two days, I drove. Luckily, I live only 4.5km away so a drive after 9am is only 15 min. During rush hour would be 1/2 hr and by bike, 17 min.
I am totally mobile. I checked my bike, cleaned the chain and rode around the block about six times (no hills).
Anybody else gone through this? I'm itching to get back on my bike.

Not to mention you've got a lot of nasty antibiotics coursing through your system and takes a while to repopulate your gut with beneficial flora which is supposedly the function of your appendix in the first place.

You are better off waiting. You could loose more than a few weeks off the bike and you could loose time from work.Be patient.

Well that's a lot different from my story. I came home from work (on my bike) early on a Tuesday with a bad stomach ache. Drove to work on Wednesday morning... still bad, called a doctor (I didn't have a regular PCP). She said come in, she felt my stomach and said, "probably appendicitis", sent me to the scanning place - guy said "I am not a doctor, I can't diagnose you, but that's appendicitis". Admitted to hospital, surgery at 11:30pm, home the next day feeling great. Rode my bike to work on the next Tuesday... so one week off the bike, 9 days before I was back on The Mountain doing my regular ride.
No rupture... that's the big difference between me and you.

In May 2000 I had my appendix rupture, but it was 3 days before I finally gave in, very stupid on my part. Even with the initial surgery I went septic in my abdominal cavity and gangrene set in. The surgical incision ruptured and my bowel eviscerated, at home. This earned me a helo flight, and emergency surgery, then a month's stay before another month at home with an open wound that was allowed to close naturally, with daily home wound care and dressing change. It was another 10 years, and 10 more major surgeries to battle scar tissue accumulation caused by the gangrene attack, and its damage to my small intestine's outer tissue.
If you have a severe abdominal pain session, much like a really strong constipation session, and it has a lot of nausea also, don't be foolish and try to tough it out. If its appendicitis, or an already ruptured appendix, the doctor can begin the work necessary and save you a whole lot of grief. if its just some normal malady, like constipation and/or some virus in your gut, you will be out the visit cost and possibly some OTC, or Rx medication(s). My total bill over the decade between 2000 and 2010 would stagger you, even with good health insurance, and salary continuation, it was a real financial blow that we are just getting out of. Up to you what you would like to face, good luck to the OP on a total recovery, it sounds like he is on the way now, best wishes to him.
