winter laziness

although our winters are not cold, snowy or even wet, I got this streak of laziness, it's like someone inside telling me to eat more and lay back. Maybe it's related to day length or some circadian rhythm controlled by hormones, but one thing for sure I always get these streaks in the winter. today I gave way to my lazy voice and just didn't do anything.
Anyone else prone to "down periods" or is this forum made up only of go getters.

I think we all have periods of Hey Mr Custer I Don't Want To Go.

We don't have the Armstrong cash cow at the end of the ride.

LOL, no your not alone, this time of year in Southern CO. it's pretty chilly to ride a bicycle so it's real easy for me to "bundle up like the Michelin Man" and ride the "motorcycle" (can you say,Yes I have an electric vest!), when I should be out braving the cold on the bicycle since I can't afford a trainer as of yet and I've only been able to do a 1-day 24 mile ride since Mon. Today is 25 degrees and feels like 15 with the windchill but it's sunny and I really want to ride the bicycle, I KNOW I don't have the proper and extremely expensive Gore-Tex bicycling gear to ride in these temps!! :O I do wish I could hit the lotto and have a "winter" condo in AZ, just checked, my numbers sucked so it's either stay inside or freeze my a$$ off , SIGH!

it's very possible if i had an Irma's with fresh rhubarb pie and a hot chocolate within 30 miles of country riding I might have gone for it.

Your built in cave man intuition is telling you that cold means food shortage. Store some body fat for the winter.

Too true. The only thing is I am a small eater. I have to get out on the bike to make room for the extra food to increase the fat storage. More riding means more pie to eat, so no choice.

If anything- I try to exercise more in the winter, and in previous years this has been down the gym in the evenings, but we now have lights so night riding as the extra exercise in the week. If I don't exercise I get lazy and then it becomes hard to get fit in the spring.

I usually take it easy the final quarter of the year from Oct. 1st on . . . just enough to "get by". Put on a few pounds, cut back on the workouts, cut back on intensity of the workouts that I still do, rest more, reach for that extra slice of pizza, etc. Does a body good. Regeneration. The rest of each year from January on is tough enough.

It is called Seasonal Affective Disorder. S.A.D. Try Google if you really want to learn more.

I,m going to Irma's Saturday morning if I have to hijack a freaking snow plow. Pie, gimme pie.

I usually get this way during the winter. Typically add about 5-7 lbs on top of my already 15 pound overweight. But for whatever reason biking which I took up in August has got me going. In addition to riding at least 2 times a week I work out another 2 times between the elipitical trainer and the gym. Just yesterday I stopped taking my cholesterol lowering drugs (with my doctors knowledge) and I don't want to start again. About a month ago I cut my blood pressure medicine in half (with my doctors knowledge).

By January, I get so totally bored with peddling around the inside of my garage, but I can't get out given dark-by-5:00 and home-by-5:00 coinciding. Like others, December I slow down, grow gray day soporific, stoke up on carbs needlessly but emotionally, get through the distractions of Christmas, square away, sense those weakly warm days in late February coming and my own flacid state....and get rolling again. January is a great month for resolves and regrouping.

Like OldCrank above, right now I just want to wrap myself in a cheesy, soothing slice of warm pizza and dream away until the clarion call of January. Stapfam, is it true that your wife and kids fall out on the lawn each morning at 5:00AM to salute your bike? jk.

I'm gaining weight just reading about how others deal with the winter blahs.

Here's a link for anyone interested.

In the absence of Rhubarb Pie I guess I'll have to settle for Rhubarb Wine.

OK. Here I go. About to ride for an hour or less. Hate it, but it's sunny and 49 degrees and likely to be much worse later, so I'm riding because I can't master my rollers. This used to be fun. Now it's a duty.

Funny how I missed this when it was posted nearly 4 years ago- But If Granny gear still visits (WHERE ARE YOU?)It is not true.--They do it at 8am to to get the bike out so I can get out of their hair quicker.

I think our bodies develop a seasonal clock. When certain seasons roll around, your body says, HEY for the past 48 years we put on some winter fat (cave man, yup) and sit by the fire. Of course having Thanksgiving, Christmas, Holiday parties, football, Basketball and Hockey every stinking night of the week is a good reason to vegetate. And what goes better with games and family gathering than PIE, ice cream, carrot cake, nachos and some good wine or "Adult Beverage." When I spent 6 years in the midwest 5 months of the year were pretty much weather locked. Now that I'm back in the Southwest, winter is a great time. But ask me my weight in March and I will see how good I really am.

Hmmmm, I think I should commit to 1200 dirt miles by the end of March. That should do it.

Whatever it is, I've got it too. But the weekend forecast looks good, so I'm going to get out and burn off some of the winter laziness.

We do not have in winter condo in Arizona . . .
But do live there most of the year. We escape the 100+ degrees of summer by heading 'up north' somehwere for 3 months; that makes us Sunbirds instead of Snowbirds.
Temps today: mid-40s in the early a.m. then up to 74 degrees in the p.m.
Moved out west 31 years ago from Michigan. . . . have never regretted it!
No winter b-la-a-a-h-s or laziness for us two.
Pedal on TWOgether!

38 days until the first sanctioned USCF race of the season on New Years Day - Mount San Bruno Hill Climb and I am registered in M 55+. Thursday, Thanksgiving morning, my wife and I are racing up Mount Hamilton 4400 vertical feet 19 mile climb. Today, we did z4 and z5 intervals on Mount San Bruno getting ready for T-day. You guys need to HTFU.

Here is a pic from today's ride looking down Radio Road descending Mount San Bruno with the Pacific in the distant background.

Lazy!

Its tough to be lazy if riding in December and beyond is important to you living in Canada. I.m about to install the snow tires so that riding through wind, snow, ice and slush will be a breeze!!! Yeah right. To all of you in warmer climates ....enjoy.\

I tend to switch my workout routine. I spend more time in the weight room, and less time on the road. And, as much as I hate it, it's the only time of year that I ride the indoor trainer. I've found that if I push through this shorter, colder days stuff, I have more energy and an overall better attitude. But, the confession is that I must push through it. Winter is less than my favorite time of year. We've been luck so far with warmer than usual temperatures here in SE Pennsylvania, but the darkness still gets to me.
