New Guy Intro

3Arial

Hey all, I just wanted to do a quick intro. Been lurking for a while and have enjoyed learning from your shared experiences. Been cycling going on 4 years and my only regret is that I didn't get in to it sooner! I'll be 55 in August and I am currently living in the Gulf Coast region of Florida (cycling weather just about year round!). Ride mostly paved trails (luckily, I have easy access to the Suncoast, Pinellas, & Withlacoochee trails). I teach 6th graders so the solitude and relative silence of my rides are key to my motivations to keep riding. Not sure what I'll be able to add to this community of dedicated cyclists but I really look forward keeping up with the shared experinces and wisdom!

Welcome Madli,

My wife and I spent a very enjoyable camping holiday at your Fort DeSoto County park many years ago. After a day with 6th graders, a good, stress-reducing ride on a bicycle is essential! One of the gals who often leads rides for our touring club is a 5th grade teacher, and she often remarks about what a catharsis cycling can be. Welcome. OHB

GrannyGear 01-31-06 10:29 AM

Welcome Madli....I teach 4th and will "+1" the catharsis part...although I also enjoy the pleasures of riding with others. Look forward to hearing your views, experiences, etc. If enough of us teachers gather here, we can drive out the humans and hijack the entire BF 50Plus forum. Think of that. Nya hah hah hah!

Welcome to BF from the ME. Regret not what you have not done, cherish and augment what you have learned.

Hello Madli. Although I infrequently post on the threads, I welcome you as another source of information and encouragement (especially after bumming out my knee recently on a ride therefore just lurking the web). You will really enjoy this forum as it is, I think, the best out there except when GrannyGear posts pics of his rides! When I see them, I walk by my bike and slap it across its headlights!

P.S. I left the corporate life to take up teaching Jr. High and High School this year.

OK - I'll join in with the Lemmings.
and I just quit teaching 6th grade (among various other careers along the way) 5/2004.

Oh, by the way, welcome! :D

It is a small world... I used to be in the sixth grade!!!

I was a fine student, and blessed my teachers by my presence... That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Welcome to the forum!

Welcome Madli,
I can almost remember the sixth grade. Please be tolerant/patient with my grammer and spelling :>)

- and-yet-another-Welcome-Madli!

:-)

- did a ride towards you last weekend - a 50-miler roundtrip up to the top 'o the trail in Tarpon Springs (tagging the reflectors is getting to be a habit)...

- how far down have you gone on the Pinellas Trail? a nice branch-off is the shortie down to Gulfport...

BigGuy 01-31-06 05:22 PM

Welcome, from the other end of the continent too...'course up here we only get about 3 days of riding time in what you guys call summer. The problem is when you get going too fast the icicles grow back towards you -- you don't want to do an endo then!

Oh yeh, I taught too - college....don't think I could have survived grade 5ers.

Raketmensch 01-31-06 06:13 PM

And welcome, also, from a thousand or so miles north of you. I have to say, it's days like this I do envy those who live in the world of year-round outdoor cycling. You have found a good place here... good people with a strong common interest, and all the help and encouragement you could ask for. I think you'll fit right in.

Welcome Madli!!

My mother taught 6th grade and I always went in ahead of school starting in the fall to put up all the bulletin board stuff. She also let me grade the math tests.........

Prosody 01-31-06 09:00 PM

Welcome. 9th -12th grades here. I am in awe of someone who can teach 6th grade.

Digital Gee 01-31-06 10:52 PM

Sixth grade I had the dreaded Mrs. Ursum . Worse'em Ursum, we called her. I suppose we made her life a living hell. Anyway--welcome to the forum, from someone on the other coast (the left coast). :)

Love the Pinellas Trail! Have completed the whole loop on a couple of occassions but I usually go from Tarpon to Clearwater and back. Longer rides during my off-days of Summer!

Welcome to the group! You must be a person of patience. As the parent of a 6th grader. Thank you. Here is to hoping all your rides are quiet & peaceful. Bob

madli 02-01-06 05:54 AM

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I am extremely grateful. The benefits of cycling are both universal and personal. Besides losing 65 lbs. over the last 4 years, cycling provides me with the perfect antidote from the whirlwind of emotions and misguided energy that fills my classes each day! It is also connects me to my students who love to ride as well (though they mostly favor the bikes of the BMX variety)!
