Last week, my LBS (the good folks at Adams Avenue Bicycles) recommended I put some new tires on my Cypress SX. I had two mismatched tires, and one was a 23mm tire that made me a bit nervous when I found myself on dirt, gravel, or whatever.

Anyway, the guy recommended some brand but it wasn't in stock, so he suggested I give 'em a call in a week or so. I immediately forgot the name of the tire, the moment I left the store. I called today. When I called, they asked me, what tire were we ordering for you?

"Let's see," I said, stalling for time. "I know it wasn't an armadillo -- but I do think it had an animal name. Um, oh yeah! Donkey! or Mule -- something like that! Not A$$ tire, but something related..."

Long silence on the phone, followed by some guffawing...

"Oh -- you mean Specialized Boroughs! Boroughs as in New York City!"

"Yeah," I responded, not sure what was so funny. "Burros! That's it! I knew it was something related to the donkey!"

Well, why not? Burros could have been the name, just like armadillos! Tough, stubborn tires. With a little kick to 'em.

Anyway...

Went over, bringing with me a six pack of Red Trolley Lager, and they installed the tires. 700x32. Now I can leave the pavement without worry.

And now I ride a Giant bike, with a Specialized saddle and Specialized tires. And a Trek saddlebag and Trek helmet.

Boroughs, burros, whatever...

I'm going off-line for 5 or 6 days, as I will be away on a trip to do some family buisness. I was kind of feeling bad that I'd miss this weekend's 50+ adventures, but after this thread-starter, all I can do is thank my lucky stars I'll be free to let my psyche heal.

LBS: "uh, yeah, riiiiiiight."
DG: "No, really. Last week I came in and you said you'd order me some burritos...or burros, or something."

DG: From the sounds of it, you have the typical United Nations bike with parts from all over. Why not have a Noah's ark bike too? Get yourself a cateye computer, a terry fly saddle, etc.

DG - what do you think of the new skins? What kind of psi can you put in them?
I just changed over from 28 slicks to a Specialized Infinity 32 on the cross bike to use on and off road. They will run 75 - 100 psi, tried them last week at 90 psi for a 50 mile ride and the bike road like a caddie and didn't seem to effect how fast it would roll along.
Before with the 28 tires a 30 mile ride felt like I rode a tank and my back was sore - not now. For my style of riding a multi purpose tire without nobbies seems to be the answer.

I've only had one ride so far, and just 20 miles or so, and with lots of wind, so I'm not completely sure yet how they feel. I can go with a range of 50-100 psi (which seems like quite a range!), and I have it set at the moment at 100 in back, 90 in front.

The bike feels a bit slower and a bit heavier, but again, with all that wind, I'm not sure yet. But, the cracks in the road and the occasional "shortcut" over non-paved turf is smooth and easy. Time will tell.

DG,
I just installed those same tires. I'm running 110 psi in both. I'm still trying to figure out what I think of them (only one ride so far).
I do have one question for you about them. I installed them acording to the direction arrows on the side but looking at the tread pattern it seems wrong to me (like thew are facing the wrong way). If you are stradeling the top frame tube and looking over the handlebars at the top of the front tire; is the chevron shaped pattern in the tire pointing towards you or away from you?

Well, I'm not sure it's a chevron, but the indented tread line goes from nearly the center of the tire outward and backward (toward the saddle) to the edge of the tire. So, toward me and to the left or right, alternatively. The little design thingie on the outside of the tire (not actually on the side, but on the edge) is "pointed," if that's the right word, away from me or towards the front. Does that make ANY sense?

Thanks, I have them on right (actually found an arrow pointing on the sidewall I hadn't noticed till just now);I can't explain why they didn't look correct to me.
