At 68, I rode my age
Last Sunday was my 68th birthday, and I was able to ride 68 miles. I rode with the Bowling Green Bike Club, and the farmland we rode through was very beautiful. I was on my new Fuji Touring bike, and it performed beautifully. The Fuji Touring is a great road bike; the next day I expected I would be sore, but I wasn't. The whole trip, with stops, took me 6 hours, and I averaged a blazing 12.1 mph. The Bowling Green club turned out around 200 cyclists, who rode 8, 30 and 68 mile routes. The club did a great job providing maps, and particularly marking the pavement where turns were. I never saw so many fine high end bikes -- it looked like a new bike show, and all the riders were dressed like a million bucks, except me: I was wearing floppy shorts. One sad story I heard while there: one member bought a brand new Trek Madone (sp?) for $9,900. Last month, after his first glorious ride, he loaded his prize on his rooftop rack and drove home. Into the garage he goes, forgetting what was on the top of his car. The bike was destroyed, but they were able to save most of the components. He went right out and bought another frame. Some Trek dealer made out okay that month.

FWW,
I will be 65 this year. I just completed a 3000 mile tour at 120 miles/day. My physical condition AFTER that tour is so good that I am thinking to do another such tour in 2008. (time and money are a barrier to doing it next year)
Last night training, on a hydraulic trainer, was 100 RPM at 16.5 MPH for one hour. Every 15 minutes out of saddle for two minutes in big gears at 18 MPH. It felt great.
