It would never work out. Every time someone tried to buy a bike, Gary would grab it back from them screaming "No no no no no, mine mine mine mine mine!"

Now it's a whole LBS
For a man who seems to revel in viewing, trying, ruminating about a new / other / third bike, my heartfelt suggestion would be to view / try / ruminate on this purchase until the opportunity passes right on by...
Riding bikes is a better avocation perhaps than actually owning a bike shop full of pedal-worthy steeds. Why run a perfectly good avocation? In my younger days I was going to switch from landscape architecture to music - a wise man gave me this advice about an avocation vs. a vocation concerning music. LA has been a wonderful vocation and I still love music.

Of course you're right. I wasn't really serious about buying a bike shop; I was amused that it was advertised on craigslist, and then the thought of ME actually buying such a shop gave me a bigger laugh, and that's when I decided to post.
Me, running a bike shop?

But on the other hand, all of your rides now become 'business expenses'. $7,000 Carbon fiber Madone SSL, here we come!

I knew you were kidding but it IS cool to think about...for me the best part would be hiring these young riders to work there: one each for MTB, CYclocross, Roadriding and then getting to listen/learn from them all the geeky techno stuff that I can never remember anyway.
And to get to sponsor wonderful charity rides, community events and PIE-EATING CONTESTS with a big sign "GG's LBS loves PIE"

The price is over three and half times net cash flow, before tax**********?? Was your salary taken out?
How much is the inventory worth? Any working capital included?
Unless the inventory is more than the asking price (substantially), and unless you are willing to work for something less than $40,000 per year, I believe I'd pass.
On the other hand, if you think there might be an LBS in your future, then take a hard look and learn the numbers.

Suppose we all contribute and own shares in the shop. One of you astute business heads can manage, we can take turns wrenching, no clerk will be pimply or 20Something, Gary can stand at the door as Greeter (a la WalMart), and we'll call it...........Fred's Place: A Shoppe for Bicycles and Advice.
*** We'll also have a counter that sells pie slices (and "buns" -- whatever they are-- for Brits like Stapfam.)
Soon enough, we'll franchise.

I can just see DG selling a bike!
"Now be sure and think this over a long time."
"Don't make a decision too hastily."
"Have you asked everybody on BFN what they think about the bike?"
"Hey, I know of a bike just like the one you are interested in - check it out on Craigslist."
"Be sure to check your family finances - I wouldn't want this bike to be a strain on your budget."
"I think you can get it cheaper used."
"Have you looked at every single other similar bike ever made?"
Yes. DG, the natural born salesperson!

I used to hang out in Fallbrook at a friend's place when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton... Maybe you should buy the shop and commission a house brand bike in Scarlet and Gold with a name like Semper Fi you could increase sales!
Then of course you could sell Semper Pie!!!!!!

That may take the fun out of bicycling for you Gary.
It might be the perfect business for a gal who liked to meet cute Marines though.

Of course you should go for it. The only way you're ever gonna buy a decent bike is to buy the whole damn bike shop. Of course you'll be too busy and too broke to ever ride it.

Can I lay hands on each bike and bless it? Sort of like the Rabbi in a Kosher butcher shop.

The question is, Digital Gee, do you live close enough to the store to commute (bike or car) economically in to work and would the cash flow cover your household negative cashflow?
