Bee in the bonnet

OK, so I was half-watching the TDF* yesterday and they were talking about a rider who had gotten a bee sting in the noggin. The bee flew into one of the vents in his helmet and, being trapped and angry, did what comes naturally to a bee. "Happens pretty often" said the announcer. Geez Louise, I thought, as if worrying about distracted or hostile drivers and road hazards ain't enough....

Has that happened to any of you?

*I tried to get into it...but watching bike racing on TV is only slightly more interesting that watching paint dry IMO. Sacrilege in some quarters, I know. Perhaps it's a function of my general disinterest in competitive sports.

Yes, last Sunday, ouch.
The week before it got into my shirt, that was no better. My favored bike trail goes through a swamp.

I was on a ride. Stopped for an orange juice. A bee flew into the juice bottle. I took a swig. Got stung on the tongue. That's something you don't forget soon.

I had a bee fly into my mouth (I'm a happy cyclist). The buzzing reverberated through my skull. I spit him out, neither the worse for wear.

At least once a season I get one in the helmet vent or down the jersey.

I had a yellow helmet, but had never had a bee get inside it. One day I read where yellow helmets attract bees. So I got a silver helmet, and had a bee fly inside it the first ride! No sting, as I was wearing a sweat/do wrap, so it was pretty funny.

When the vented helmets first came out- it was a common problem that bees- flys and other insects would get inside the helmets. Met started making helmets with gauze on the inside of the vents to stop this problem. Haven't seen any other manufacturere take the idea up and for some reason met have dropped this form of protection

I always wear a scull cap or dwe rad underneath my helmet for this very reason..... I can't stand the feeling of bugs crawling around in my hair.

Most of us have no hair to worry about.

I have never had a bee get into my helmet. But I do get stung about once or twice per year when a bee or wasp gets tangled in my clothes and nails me for it.
