How old are you?

Sunday, I led a ride for my local club up in Volusia County. The club had another ride going close to town that was oriented to the slower riders so only "A" riders showed up for this one. Fortunately, our club membership has been greying so it wasn't too bad. The pace was brisk but not ugly. Megan, who is one of our club member's daughters, and races was out with us practicing as were three male youngsters, two of whom we dropped pretty quickly. Brad and Keith, who are both strong riders looked a little drawn. Well into the ride, Brad said to me that he was getting to old for this. Then he said " How old are you, Pat?". I told Brad that I am 54 and Brad looked shocked & suitably impressed because I was having an easier time than he was. He said that he was 51. Then he told Keith that I was older than both of them. Well, I guess sometimes being old can have advantages.

When your looking to drop someone, being under 160 lbs helps.

Maybe the question should be "how young do you feel"?

I think it was Satchel Paige who had the great line, "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you were?"

My favourite quote came from a 70 y.o. friend - we were riding along at a decent pace, chatting and enjoying the day when we were passed by a younger pair of riders on a slight incline, I started to pick up the pace to keep up with them when he told me "Don't worry, when you are passed by someone half your age, that is how it is supposed to be"

Yeah, you have to remember that those youngsters, though they passed you, may be thousands of miles behind you in total mileage.

By the time Mozart was my age, he'd been dead for 17 years.

And I've yet to write a single symphony or opera. Dang.

A bit off topic. Your post reminds me of my uncles' favorite rhyme:

Leprosy, I've got leprosy,
One of my eyeballs just fell into my highball,
I've got leprosy.

I'm well into the downhill slide, kicking and screaming and trying to slow it down by clawing the ground. I just can't seem to get any traction!! This means 58.
