IMHO, riding a MTB on the road is road riding, not MTB riding.

I'm slow enough as it is on the road, when I get on trails, it's like 4 MPH. I can barely stay upright. Plus the local trails are filled with 20-something yahoos. Plus I hate technical riding when it dominates the route.

Riding where you are not riding hard enough so the brain has time to think and you use your loaf and find a pie shop.

I guess I'm lucky in the respect that I live within 20 minutes (driving) of 4 state forests that are laced with anywhere from 10 to 30 miles of trails and dirt roads. I also live within biking range of another. So if you don't want technical you just stay off the expert trails. Here the state classifies MTB trails the same as ski trails.

There is one area called Vietnam owned by NEMBA (New England MB assoc). It's only 2 miles from my house but is all expert/very technical. That's were all the 20-somethings hang out.
