Water question
 
I've heard that it's a good rule of thumb to consume one ounce of water per pound of body weight per day. That seems like an AWFUL lot of water! If my calculations are correct, I'd be drinking two gallons a day. Lord!

Has anyone else heard this?

Now that water could be in any form you like- Water- Gatorade- Energy drink- Coffee- Tea oe beer.

Take your choice!!!!

2 gallons a day sounds a lot unless you are exercising and in a 12 hour bike ride- I will drink 12 litres. That is getting on for 3 gallons so get on your bike- cycle all day and clean out the system.

I heard something similar for a college rugby team, except they were talking about beer.

Lets see, if I sleep for 8 hours and ride for 12 hours that only leaves 4 hours for going to the bathroom. Nope, I don't think that I could manage it.

Sleep for 8 Hours? As you have to get up at 4am for a 6am start and you finish at 6pm- you forget the bathroom. All that sweating and you won't need it. And you start on catching up on the sleep by 6:05pm

I think the correct number is about 1/2 what you heard. As I recall, I was told to drink 4, 12oz. glasses of water when I had a prostate problem. That was in addition to morning coffee, orange juice, noon soda with lunch, dinner drink, and so on. Twice that only seems reasonable if you own stock in Porta Potty.

Wow, you hear some pretty goofy things.

Often nutrient needs are tied to caloric expenditure as well as age and. gender. Would anyone care to speculate about just what types of substances require body weight as a guideline for dosing?

Is the thread starter using these substances?

Common guideline is 8-10 8oz glasses per day, but it is also under debate. I have a two liter (67oz) sports jug that I keep by my desk and sip during the day, I usually kill it off in the normal workday. It also keeps me away from the soda machine, and I feel a little less guilty for my 'adult' beverages later in the evening ;) ....

I think someone made a math error. And fortunately for you, its in your favor. It's half your weight in ounces of water. I'm not sure I buy it, I just go by thirst, but here it is.

Heavily depends on how hard you are working. The accidently super-hot day I hiked the canyon from rim-to-river-to-rim, that would have been way low. We couldn't get or carry enough water to keep up with our losses. I bet for a long hot day on a bike ride, that would be about right. The danger is deciding you're not that thirsty or hungry. Don't think twice. Fuel and hydrate heavily.

On a tour long ago, we developed the Four Rules of Cycling some of which are germaine to this discussion:

1. Drink before you're thirsty,

2. Eat before you're hungry,

3. Downshift before you have to, and

4. Never refuse sex.

Regarding Dbg's rim-to-rim experience, Ms. Coyote and I did that in July and it took about 2.5 gallons of fluid each while walking. . .not including pre-hike, night-time, and post-hike top-up. Stuning experience.
