I found out what can happen...
...when your shoelace gets caught up in the chain.
Ain't pretty.
Didn't fall, though...
And now, another thing to try to remember to check before lifting my leg over the bike for a ride.

happens to me once a month: have finally learned to tie my shoelaces to the side away from the BB, double knot them but still manage to forget about once a month and yes, it ain't purdy...

Tie them as normal but tuck the laces in. Funny thing is that all my shoe laces are chewed at one end- As if someone has put them through a couple of string chewing cogs.

If possible, wear mountain bike or bike shoes that have velcro over the top of the shoe strings...exactly for that reason.

I can beat that story. Riding barefoot on Fourth of July when I was 12, I hit ChiChi Rodriguez and knocked her up onto the sidewalk. While her father swore at me and threatened the police, I looked down at my toe which had been caught in the spokes. A mess. Required surgery by the 8th grade.
Bikes figure large in our lives if you think about it.
Don't ride barefoot, DG.
(Obviously a lazy afternoon here.......P.S. ChiChi survived and continued her pesty ways until I left for college. I later learned she left High School and claimed to have out of body experiences. I should have knocked more sense into her.)

Pedal backwards!
That has saved me numerous times while commuting when all of the sudden I felt my shoelaces getting really tight!

A sure way of telling if someone cycles is if their right shoe lace is shorter than their left.

If you really want some excitement, try it on a fixed gear. One time should be sufficient to induce behavior modification.

Happens to me a couple of times a year, when I use my SPD shoes. But what actually happened DG? All that ever happens to me is I break the laces and just keep pedalin'.

Well, the lace got caught...I started to skid, if i remember. I glanced down, saw the problem, applied the brakes, and stopped the bike. All ended well, but my HR went up. And, in the few seconds it took to adjust my shoelace and get back on the bike, all hope of meeting the woman of my dreams evaporated, because I was one minute too late. We would have had a fateful meeting up ahead, but I didn't get there on time. Now I'll never meet her, know her name, or give her the deed to the house after we split up.
Upon reflection, perhaps it was a 'happy accident' after all!
