First ride with Garmin 305
I had an hour before last nights "club ride" where we do loops in a 1.5 mile lighted business park. Since I had already charged up and programmed the new unit I decided to see if I could get the old wired Ciclo stuff off the Madone and the Garmin installed before the ride. To my surprise installing the Garmin along with the Cadence/Speed sensor was easier than most other cyclometers I had installed. In fact it look me longer to get all the zip ties off the old wired stuff than it did to put the new stuff on-including aligning the magnets for the cadence and speed.
This thing is so smart it automatically figured out my wheel size on my first ride without me having to input the circumference of the wheel. Plus it gave me an alert to let me know it had automatically sized the wheel while I was riding!!! I downloaded the first ride into the training center this morning and again I'm really impressed with its ease of use and information available. All I can say is Wow....... I was not expecting to see the course outlined so well on the map with all the corresponding data available. It has even more information and tools than I was expecting, such as providing the amount of time in 5 HR Zones (I hit them all last night!!) and the time in different speed zones(I did NOT hit all those!!). I'm really looking forward to the final Blackberry Cobbler 100 mile ride tomorrow just to see how the Garmin performs in mapping the route and providing all the different data. I'm really curious to see the grade of some of the hills out there and with this thing all you have to do is point and click on the graphs after the data is downloaded. The only thing I would change is to make the numbers larger on the unit when it has multiple displays. Maybe it will be better in the sunlight but last night it was hard to glance at the screen and see the info I wanted. When you're riding in the dark doing 25+ mph with 30 others and just inches off each others wheels, you don't really want to take your eyes off the folks in front of you for very long........ Edit: Just figured out how to turn on the backlight feature....not sure if I could have done that last night anyway but will give that try next time. |
Keep us updated. This is very interesting, despite a very possible hit to my credit card in the near future.

Wait until you crash with the thing on. I did this last year and you can see the exact spot on the course you went down as your speed drops to zero and your HR goes up. Luckily mounting it on the stem prevented anything on the garmin from being broken. Even more fun is to convert one of your rides to Google Earth and then use the tour function to fly your ride from a birds eye view.

Good grief, man! I've just paid a tutition bill for my youngest. Now I'm thinking maybe he should have paid his own bill. I've gotta figure out how to get one of these.

^^^^^ wow, messed up priorities!
kidding! |
I see one of those gadgets in my immediate future.
Keep us posted on the distance ride tomorrow. I am particularly interested in the route mapping and elevation % feature. |
Just wondering: Does it suggest ways to get you into the sack with a hot 23-year-old?

P.S. Nice to see your screen name popping up again, Blackberry. |

Gald you're enjoying your Garmin, jppe. I still say the software sucks, but I'm very happy with the unit itself and the features. I'd also echo your sentiments about mounting it. Took all of about 10 minutes on each of our bikes. Also, you can find additional sensors for your other bikes for around $30 each (the 305 will handle up to 3 unique sensors). Take care, Steve |
