Would you buy used cycling shorts?

I see used cycling shorts on eBay all the time.

The prices might be good, but I expect the price for used underwear is pretty good too.

Would you buy one year old, used cycling shorts?

I'm not too keen on the idea.

Some stuff on e-bay is brand new, however as to used...Would you buy underwear from Goodwill? I think the answer to your question and mine is the same.

I bought a used--but thoroughly drycleaned--bathing suit from the Salvation Army--to the utter horror of every female to whom I mentioned this purcase. I've donated blood since, and they took it.

Second-hand boxer shorts are OK, but not briefs.

There is only one answer to that and for me that is NO. Probably nothing wrong with it but if someone bought them- Tried them on and they don't fit- Presuming they bought the right size- They probably won't fit me either. I just picked up a top in a sale. I am a Medium but these are marked up XXL.

Before handing over any money- I always try Clothing on to ensure tha the stuff fits me in the first place. That cannot be done on mail order.

I'm not too keen either

I don't wear underwear with cycling shorts, and I don't care how clean the used shorts look,,no thank you.

There would be no justification for this thread without someone taking the opposite view. Clothing is clothing. If you buy used cycling shorts (or boxer shorts or briefs) and clean it yourself, what would you imagine could still be on those fabrics that should worry you?

I wouldn't be up to briefs if they had permanent stains - but that's just because I'm as unjustifiably paranoid as the rest of the posters in this thread thus far (Blackberry excluded). In reality, if you wash them in hot water with good detergent (as in a washing machine), or, in the case of cycling shorts, dry clean them (is that the way you clean that stuff?? I just wash mine in the washer), there is absolutely no reason to fear "picking up" anything unsavory.

I wouldn't care much. You would wash them, so what's the difference?

Otoh: I doubt that I would save enough to make it worth the effort. I usually buy shorts, jerseys, etc. when Performance has a 20% off sale. Take 10% for my Team Performance membership. Factor in that I buy stuff that is already maked down and it is hard to imagine that it is worth bothering with buying used.

One of the local college fraternities in St Louis, for a Christmas project, collects new undies that they donate to some group that serves the homeless. It seems nobody cares too much about outer clothing but lots of people are squeemish about wearing used skivies.

OK I'll admit it, I've bought several pair. I'VE LEARNED TO ASK specific questions & pay special attention to what is said and NOT said. All I have bought still had tags attached as seller had were tried on for size and found not to fit. My bid max is about 25% of retail. I still then give them a thorough washing and drying IN THE SUN. Same for Shoes, jerseys, etc.

BTW- I wore hand me downs growing up - bet you who are 'sqemish(sp?)' never had that experience.

I grew up with hand-me-downs too. But even in the hills of West Virginia, we didn't hand down underwear. Well, at least my family didn't.

I have no problems with "tried on, tags still on" stuff. After all, when you buy from a LBS, how do you know what has been tried on and what hasn't?

But some of the stuff I've seen on eBay has been 2+ years old, with descriptions like - "not too much evident wear" or "has held up well over multiple uses."

Of course if you wash it once, or twice, before wearing, I'm sure it's okay. Well, I'm reasonably sure.

Tried on? Maybe, for a big discount. Used for a year? Not if it was free.

Yes, But not on ebay. I'll buy locally where I can see the condition and judge the amount of wear. So with regard to the comment about Goodwill, yeah, I'd rather buy used clothing locally where I can see it, although I don't buy at Goodwill (but I've donated a few bikes to them). A local guy got out of MTBing and sold me $65 Fox shorts, in like new condition for $10.

Washing machines have been aptly described as "amusement parks for germs". (you know, just tumbling all around, no real harm). All bike clothing is marked as "Wash Cold", and most is "Hang to Dry". Use of chlorine would destroy them quickly. So, my point is, that you don't really get shorts "clean" in the wash. You just dilute the nasty stuff. It's not a matter of personal preference, it's a matter of - are you serious!! (Please note that I've refrained from the used of all double and triple entendres, semi-obscure reference to body parts, and otherwise kept this as "clean" as I do my cycling clothing. )

People, who are a walking collection of cooperating germs; are funny when
they get worked up over germs in places they can do no harm.

I guess that depends on when and where. Check out the scenes from the Summer Solstice Parade in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle...

You spend over a $1000 on a bike but buy somebody's old raggedy-ass underwear. Come on.
