eTrike: The Case for Assistance
I'm 50++ and I've been seriously biking for about 15 years. I sold my car, and now I bike everywhere. On vacations I take my bike on tours. I have a tandem and take my non-biking partner on some of the tours too!
About 2 years ago I got a great new job. I love the people and the job, but the 42 km commute is a bit much on a bike especially in the winter and the heat of the summer.
This is where my eTrike comes in. I have put together this trike from a standard frame and a bunch of new parts. If there is anyone else interested in this kind of alternative to a car, I invite you to visit my journal

WOW! That is really great - and nice job as well! I admire your commitment (as well as your love of cycling).
As an aside - Crazy Guy on a Bike is my second favorite bike site.

Yes there are hills, I live beside Lake Ontario, and travel north and east. I live on a street that is a hill and then bike on hilly sidestreets for about a kilometre before I travel east for a bit and then another big hill as I travel north.
The electric hub gives assistance on the hills, but I have to still make some effort to make it to the top. It takes a bit over one hour under ideal conditions to make the trip.
It's not just hills. Headwinds really can slow you down, and I find the hub helps with that too. Please don't get the idea I am not pedalling! The hub mainly just assists you. I find it very good when I need to quickly make a lane change or accelerate through an intersection.
