Had to adjust it to a bit below the maximum setting for a perfect fit.

You have just found the secret of a helmet. It has to be comfortable.

And I went and purchased one at the big bike show tonight. The Triton is a low end helmet, listing for $40. Sale price was $30. Tried on two more, so very comfortable. By far the most comfortable helmet my fathead has ever worn.

And they had it in a color that perfectly matches my bent!

Now I have to careful not to wear matching colors when I ride.

Does it look like a crown of woven lightning bolts?

Not on my head it doesn't.

It does have a lot of holes, should keep cool.

Here it is, in the color I selected:

Looks like a helmet Honda would have manufactured, were they to manufacture helmets. Good, solid, slightly boring appearance but hey -- it will last.

It matches my head, good, solid, slightly boring apperance but hey--I have lasted.

Methinks the pricey helmets are quite profitable for the manufacturers. Bell and Giro are the same company. I had the option of buying the fathead helmet for $30, a couple of others for $23, or prices up to the $175 range for the woven lightning bolts model.

Stay away from the woven lightning bolts, save the money for the winged shoes.

the best fitting helmet for me was a Bell Furio which could be had for 50-70 dollar range. I ended up with a Bell Sweep R as a Christmas present. The Bell helmets seem to fit my round head better than the Giros which I believe tend to be more comfortable on a more oval shaped head. In any case, there are good helmets out there that range from inexpensive to very expensive and from plain to lightning bolts. Find one you like at a price you can stomach and fugeddaboutit...

I have a question about helmut-fitting. As usual, the model or color of anything (helmut for example) you're looking for, will invariably not be stocked at your LBS but can be found online:
https://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?c...dult%20Helmets

From this thread about helmuts, and from looking at helmut websites, there is little to no mention about different sizes that helmuts come it. Some helmut-descriptions may mention small ... or large ... but in the context used, I'm led to believe they are talking about color patterns of helmut ... and not actual size of helmut.

So, my question is, are most helmuts so adjustable that for most models ... one size fits all? Or if buying a helmut online ... are there options where you can get a more reasonable-sized helmut based on your hat size?

helmets are sized in the more expensive styles...for example my Bell Sweep R is a large and inside the helmet it says 59-63cm. The lower priced helmets such as the Solar are Universal Fit.

Before you get a helment you need to get some self confidence and not worry how you will look in a helment.

The typical "Universal" fit adjustable helmet has a size of 54cm to 61cm. A medium helmet would be about the same. Sometimes these are listed in inches, such as 21.125" to 24.125". Such a helmet fits hat sizes of 6 3/4 to 7 3/4.

A small helmet would typically fit 50cm to 57cm, or hat sizes 6 1/4 to 7 1/8.

A large helmet will fit 58cm to 63cm. Hat sizes 7 1/4 to almost a size 8.

The Bell Triton large fits from 58cm to 65cm. Hat sizes 7 1/4 to 8 1/4.

These ranges might vary by 1-2 cm from manufacturer to manufacturer.

For example the Trek Men's Elite helment comes in Small (52-56cm), Medium (56-60cm), and Large (60-64). While the Trek Interval comes in S/M (52-60cm) or M/L (56-64).

However the Trek Women's Interval helmet comes in XS/S (48-56cm) or S/M (52-60cm).

A size 7 head is equivalent to a 56cm helmet. Each 1/8 of a size from that is approximately 1cm. So a 7 3/8 needs a 59cm, a 6 3/4 needs a 54cm.

The circumference of your head is normal, but you need an extra, extra tall helmet to accommodate your pointy head.

A conehead helmet would be perfect.
