I agree to a large degree. My 28 year old road bike with shimano 600 components rides as good as the day I bought it. I still ride it around town almost every day. It has toe clips and is convenient for frequent short trips. I still enjoy riding it. My new road bike with full Ultegra is really so much better that I can hardly compare. Component level is similar for the time each was bought.

The new bike really doesn't go any faster (except uphill), but it's more comfortable, lighter, shifts easier and better, has a wider gear range with many more choices, better brakes, better handling and it's prettier to boot. Definitely worth owning.
