Forgive me, for I have sinned.
I ordered a pair of Sora brifters for my 8-speed commuter. They should be here today. I built this bike up last fall with bar-end shifters and, while I like them, I don't like taking a hand off the hoods to down shift on a hill while being passed by an 18-wheeler. Or anything else, for that matter.
The bar-ends are ultimately reliable, simple, forgiving, and easy to use. I just want the comfort of not having to move my hands.

Comfort on the bike is a good thing. Hope they doo all that you are asking of them...that is make life easier on the road. I do not like riding with 18-wheelers at all. so don't very often.......peace

Once you have had brifters, there is no going back. They are the greatest bicycle development in the past 50 years, IMHO.

Sora brifters work quite well. Since the chief complaint against them is the thumb shift button (difficult to reach from the drops) folks who ride on the hoods a lot have no problem

I am looking at replacing my 7 speed down tube shifters with Sora 2X7 brifters... before I even get my Centurion on the road. So if it is a sin to replace simple gear mechanisms with brifters, I am right behind you!

I ride both styles of shifter. To be honest, after 10 minutes on either bike I feel at home. Sliding my hand down the bars to the bar-end seems pretty natural and the shifting a bit more precise or "quicker".
The brifters are extremely convenient and I like the ease of shifting out of the saddle. I have thumb trigger Campy and haven't noticed much difficulty hitting the thumb trigger from the drops.
Personally, the differences between the two don't seen that dramatic...but we all have preferences, some more strongly held than others. Variety of cycling styles and bikes within one's life is good.

I just got back from my first ride with the brifters. It was soooo nice! My left brifter has a half click position for trimming on the middle chainring. I had zero problems with chain noise.
