A question about Freddy?
 

OK I admit I am not 50 yet, but I am closer to 50 than 40 so.....

Brooks saddles, good or no good?? and why Freddy/********** I had a Brooks when I was a kid and loved it.

The dumbest question of all. What the hell is a Freddy??

A fred is a bicycle rider that you can beat who doesn't wear the right clothes.
A poseur is a bicycle rider that you can beat who does wear the right clothes.

If they can beat you, regardless of what kind of clothes they wear, they get to call you names like fred or poseur and you just have to take it.

I see, I think, so there must be alot of Freddies out there? Where does Brooks come into this whole Freddy thing?

It's just like wearing black socks. If you have a Brooks saddle and you're fast, you're extremely cool and you get to call any slower guys who ride with flite saddles "poseurs". If you have a Brooks saddle and you're slow, you're a fred.

Brooks is an anomoly. It can be Fred or OCP. And can be regarded as the opposite by either group. An Old brooks that was bought with your vintage-, or by now vintage as you have had it so long, bike and came with the bike- can be termed Fred as you have not taken the care to worry about your Butt that is now like cast Iron as you have sat on a saddle that does not fit for so long that it no longer matters. Wheras you have analysed all the options- Asked around for opinions- done a lot of research on what form of Brooks is suitable for you and then bought a saddle in a colour co-ordinated to the main colour on your frame- is definitely OCP.

Oh dear..... by that definition Hubby is a Fred and I am OCP. :o

Obcessive compulsive personality. An OCP rider will make sure that every part on his bike matches perfectly.

See also Obsessive Compulsive Poseur. Noun. A rider who spends lavishly on bikes and related kit. May or may not actually ride.

Actually, they will ride, but no further than 7-11 or perhaps Starbucks where they can pose for the rest of us in their kit, standing next to a $5,000+ bicycle.

The first Brooks saddle I saw (I tried my friends bike) was 20 years ago.It was a heavy early style,it was not at all comfortable.He replied"of course not,they're designed to break in after fifty thousand miles".I thought "that's nice".They're nerd-like, the posers in "vintage places like them".Some of the people that love them are the same people that are quick to ask" how much does your bike weigh?" the new models are lighter,perhaps comfy,maybe break-in faster. Funny,Brooks all but disappeared for most of the 90's. If a saddle suits you,it's the right saddle. Although I don't wish to put too much weight tip-top the highest point on the bike,saddles that are heavy,effect my ability to manuver the bike under me,while out of saddle and I ain't very fussy about weight per say. I'm sure there are saddles that you needn't break-in before they're really comfortable to suit most.

Fred type I (traditional British meaning): not stylish, but rides well.
Fred type II (newer American meaning): expensive, mismatched equipment and can't ride well.
poseur: dressed and equipped like a pro, but can't ride well, and has no sense of irony or humour.
OCP: dressed and equipped like a pro, able to laugh (a tiny bit) at his own obsessiveness or pretension.

I did not know the answer, where did you get that from?? I am an OCP person, for sure. Not when it comes to bikes though. At least not yet..

This thread knocked me on the floor laughing.
I guess I’m OCP. I can’t stand dirt and grime on my road bike.
When I retire I aspire to great Fredness, hopefully limited to the backyard, as I shuffle in my knee high black socks and sandals, baggy Bermuda shorts, Hawaiian shirt, straw hat…....
But I’m ashamed to admit my annoyance at carbon bottle cages. This seems to rate about 10.9 on the pose-ometer. When I see one, I must resist the urge to snap it off. Paying an extra $30 to save 2 nano-grams is poor economics. You could buy 7 DQ blizzards with that….

I got my CF bottle cages on sale plus my bike club discount, using some money that came to me by surprise because the CF matches the CF of my bike. Please don't snap them off. But I'm not really OCP, too much, but my valve stem covers do match the trim on my bike but I try to be sure my socks don't match my shirt.

It is nice that the worst weather is rain, wind or VOG. But I still had fun riding in snow in Washington DC when I was there. No big deal, I grew up in Colorado.

So you would be classified as an "Undercover OCP" I guess.:)
