Here's a nifty little gadget

Mounti

Don't know if I'd have the guts to actually install it but it would give me something to look at while I was climbing. I mean, other than the top of the hill.

I guess you could also mount it at an angle to begin with, then when you were climbing it would tell you weren't. Kind of a psychological thing.

Doesn't work really well while riding. If you're moving your handlebars back and forth it's pretty much impossible to read.

It does work if you stop your bike to cough up your lungs though.

Not the best $25 I've spent - it lives in my toolbox.

That's where mine lives, too I bought it about 5 years ago to measure a few of the hills in a local park. I now use the readings from the Garmin.

Yeah, I love everything about the 305 except the price.
I'm waiting and when it gets there, I am buying one.

I am not, however, buying a Mounti.

Hmm, seems pretty fredlike to install a carpenter level on your bike. Certainly would not be approved by the OCP crowd in the roady forum.

The OCP crowd wouldn't approve of my handlebar bell, either; but there it is and it's not leaving anytime soon. I use it too often when I'm passing the OCPs. Ooh, that really burns them!

I don't qualify either, I have a Topeak Road Morph mounted to my top tube recently defined as unOCP and have a rather large saddle bag to carry all of my junk, definetly not OCP. I do color coordinate my Jersey, gloves, socks and headwraps though. Plus I ride a $1000 AL Pilot 2.1 which would never be taken as a serious bike

That device looks very heavy and would also be a source of major aerodynamic drag. Not for me.

I have the Garmin Edge 205 which doesn't do HR or Cadence. I really like it. I went through Amazon and go a new one for $118 which is way lower than suggested retail. I really like it, and will REALLY REALLY like it once I figure everything out on it.

OCP = obsessive compulsive poser.

Not the same as a Fred.

Some overlap, though.

If your helmet, kit (if you know what a kit is, you're half-way there), bike, shoes, tires, gloves, water bottles, and Saris Bones bike rack are all red, you are an OCP.

There's nothing wrong with that.

When I'm trying to climb a tough hill, I won't even look up the hill. Nothing saps my strength for climbing like knowing how tough the hill is, I focus right in front of my wheel.

Actually, it's pretty light. Certainly lighter than my cell phone:

No really, it is lighter than my current cell phone.

Yes, that thing is a beast - still trying to figure out everything. Now IMHO - the 305 is so much better if you are using the device more than just for tracking external variables such as speed, temp, grade, mileage, etc. I got the 305 about 5 months ago and have used it as a training tool by tracking heart rate and cadence. Seems like when I am aware of these things my results are better. For example, on some rides I try to keep my cadence up - resulting in a higher speed without much of a downside (such as fatigue). Same w/ my heart rate. I guess it is kinda like riding with someone who is at your level or better, you just put in the little extra - something that I don't necessarily do if I'm on my own. With the 305, I always have a partner and something to train against.

Just the thing for the short hills around here, I said short not gradual.
I would use it when I stop and measure them. Soon though, I won't need to stop so much and then it may not be so useful.

Just because.....

I bought a SkyMounti two years ago. It's a totally unnecessary indulgence, but I like it.
On club rides I sometimes get asked after a climb "so how much (grade) was that one?"
Disagree with terry b. It is very easy to read. If I was moving around too much to read it, then I would work on my technique and try for a smoother riding style. Sometimes have trouble on a VERY rough road, but then I'm more concerned about keeping control of the bike.
One thing about it, it doesn't measure average grade from the bottom to top of a hill, like the electronic ones do. It measures the actual grade at any given point.
And it "only" goes up to 21%.

In retrospect, $25 is probably a bit overpriced. $12 to $15 may closer to it's actual value.

I have a friend who bought one of those. He said that it sounded like a better deal than it turned out to be. If you're climbing a 10% hill you bob around too much and it's too hard to read.
