Proud Papa

My oldest daughter (the one who hates cycling) got her first job yesterday, and we both couldn't be more excited. A real estate broker is taking her on as his assistant; he's going to "teach her the real esate business" and he hopes to inspire her to a career in that field.

Whether that happens isn't terribly important to me. What does matter is that she's going to learn a lot from him (he's already coaching her on how to set goals, etc.), she's not just flipping burgers (not that there's anything wrong with that...) and she'll start earning some money so she can get her own place after she graduates from HS next month.

So, within a month or two she has moved out of her mom's house, gotten a car, and now a job. Lots of changes to deal with! She's a great kid and I'm really excited for her. Think I'll go take a ride and count all our blessings!

Oh -- and the job means she's going to take out that eyebrow piercing she had done a while back. She's sad; I'm delighted (but carefully not showing it)!

We always want the best for them but it's tough to see them venture out on their own.

About the piercings... My oldest granddaughter (23) had to give up her belly button piercing. She learned it just didn't work with pregnancy

Wish her all success...its an exciting field and she'll meet some interesting people, just too bad that so much work is done in the evenings.

My daughter, who loves cycling, made some lifestyle decisions early in her career. Rather than going for the money, she joined our Ministry of Natural Resources and works for Parks Ontario, got her warden's badge, and is the Chair of her town's Museum Board. Bought a house, car, dog...adopted a boy

she takes her nose ring out when at work, but wears it the rest of the time

Hello pal

is this the one you were debating what kind of car to buy? (old crashproof American beater, new fuel efficent small, give her yours and buy a sport car?)

Anyhoo, sounds like developments are good, and the choices now for your web friends are about what kind of bike she should commute on

Orrighty, LHT, Poprad, skipdumped buildup --- let the advice begin

( More seriously, - you sound like a great and supportive parent, and she sounds like a great and delightful person. I hope all goes well for all)

She's the one. She likes to run, she's a black belt in karate, she's been a captain of her water polo team, but she HATES to ride bikes. Go figure!

Well, she must of learned something from pop. Good job and let her know we all wish her the best. My 29 year old is finally moving out of the house. she works for Fidelity and they are relocating her to Texas. I am very suprised she agreed to go because she is such a family homebody. However, I think it will be good for her and I already told her to buy a house big enough for me when I retire. I am going to miss her though.

Pretty close I never did things like normal people. I graduated HS at 17, got married, had 4 kids and went to college when they started school.

It's good to hear the good news. I think most of us has went through the same thing, but you'll never be rid of them. They think, they can pretty much do it on there own, but they always come back needing help with something. Not that I care, because I like to help, but you better not say I told you so. I just sit back and watch. Sometimes it feels good and other time feels bad, but that's the only way to learn I guess. Good luck, George

My two flew the nest a few years ago. They are now both buying their first house and allthough they had both moved away about 10 miles, Both of them have moved back to be within 1/2 a mile of us. Youngest bought her house a couple of weeks ago and ==="Dad, can you sort the garden out" and "Dad- what are you eating tonight and can it stretch to 4 as The lounge smells of too much paint" Any excuse to come and see the dog I suppose. The other one moves in a couple of weeks and they have asked the same question about the garden. But they are round most evenings as everything is packed and they don't really want to stay in the flat.

The real reason is that they both want to come back to be near their parents. Seems like I will never be shot of them but with the partners- one is a painter and decorator and the other is an IT consultant. Very handy people to know.

Being a good parent is the toughest job there is, and it never ends.

Sounds like you've got some quality kids there Gary. Like another poster said...she's still a kid so keep an eye on things.

My sons are 32 and 39 and I have a daughter from a first marriage who is 44. I've been through the mill.

Just heard from my daughter after her second day. Her boss doesn't mind her having an eyebrow piercing. Sigh.

She's ecstatic.

Hope it all works out well for her. Dealing with one graduating this year myself. She's my baby so it's especially hard. Much better head on her shoulders than I had at that age though.

Today that was the literal truth. I wanted to take her car in to have the battery checked (turned out just a loose connection which they cleaned and tightened for free) so she had my car, and I took two rides on the Roubaix.

Now see, there's another blessing! That eyebrow piercing might have been a visible tattoo. That wouldn't be nearly so easily undone.
