The trouble with N+1

Like many of you, I'm living proof that N=1 is the correct formula for answering the question, "How many bikes should one own?"

That's bad enough, but I've also learned as an avid photography buff that the question "How many lenses should one own?" is also... N+1!

Anyone else have N+1 running rampant in other areas of their lives? Where?

Gee' asked. . .

>>> Anyone else have N+1 running rampant in other areas of their lives? Where?

Well yes, actually. Last year I declared war on my lawn. My goal is to reduce the mowing burden on my "Little Bit of Paradise" to one third the current amount in ten years! [More time for cycling, see?] Only it's got a life of its own. . .one more patch of wild flowers. . .one more micro-prarie. . .one more patch of boxwoods. . .one more little tree transferred from the Forest Next Door. . .one more little expanded patch of bamboo. Ms. Coyote is convinced I've gone mad as I stand in the middle of it all talking to the dragon flys and eating sour little red snake berries.

How many guitars a player should have is described by N+1. It also describes the opimum number of amps and effects.

Unfortunately, yes. I enjoy backpacking and the collection of backpacks just seems to continue to grow. I have decided that to add another __________ (insert item here), I will have to part with a current item of the same genre. I'll let you know how it goes...

SaiKaiTai - what kind of guitar is that? Looks a little like an Adamas, but the avatar is too small to be certain...

It has to be shoes for me In fact I added another pair to the collection today.
My great-aunt once commented I had more shoes in my closet then she had owned in her entire lifetime.

I have 8 binoculars, 5 telescopes, and over 20 pieces of audio gear (6 that still use vacuum tubes).

I would love to do another round (or two) of N+1 on all of these.

Tubes! I have 3 guitar amps that are all tube and another that uses 2 in the preamp section. My dad used to fix TVs as a side job and still has a basement full of tubes. He's gone through them once or twice and sent me the ones useful for audio. I was starting to get addicted to those hot glass bottles but have stepped back a bit again. I still need to get the tube checker he's got gathering dust in the basement.

What makes it all so much worse is that, like my dad, I'm a pack rat who hates to throw anything out.

I have just had the pleasure of giving my 1980 Peugeot PKN-10E to my elder son. It's a great bike, with superb feel and handling, efficient but resilient. However, it is 2cm too tall for me, and I always felt uncomfortable about the high top tube. This was the perfect solution -- it stayed in the family, and I am down to four very distinct* fully operational bikes and one project-in-progress bike (the 1960 Capo).
