I thought Michigan Mike was going to release personal and confidential background information on BF contributors. What happened to that?

When he read that I was passing through his town, his whole attitude changed and he made a pie offering.

Nope I was getting with the Mayor to make sure the streets were swept and the "Welcome Tom" banner would be ready in time. Not sure about the HS Marching Band yet.

Do you prefer small keys to the city or one of those big gawdy things?

With regard to big and gawdy, please remember Toms previous avitar. Maybe you can get him to wear it to the Key Giving.

I am looking forward to visiting St Joseph's again. If I make good time through Chicago, I might be able to browse around for about 90 minutes - probably when you are attending your step-daughter's graduation. I also hope to make a brief stop in Battle Creek, for my father spent several months there in the early 50s, recuperating from a life-threatening Korean War injury.

As to the Grand Traverse Pie Company, I think I'll be heading right past it, on my way out of Ann Arbor on Tuesday afternoon. I think I owe it to myself to stop and sample their wares.

A silver fork would be more appropriate, along with a bib to protect from those delicious drips of pie filling

If it's before 2 or after 6, I'll be around. The construction around Chicago is much better. I very seldom get hung up there anymore.

If you want a good cup of coffee and a pastry while you are in St. Joe, go down State Street until you see South Bend Chocolate Company. Turn left at that corner (towards the lake) and right behind it is Tosi's. The owner is/was a member of the U.S. Breadbaking team (I kid you not), and their stuff is really good. The bakery is actually out close to where I live, but the coffee shop in town usually has some good stuff.

My office is on State St. in the same block as the Chocolate Company.

I've been on State and to the Chocolate Company. Very picturesque. I think that would be a delightful place to work.

Well, I was in St Joseph's today from 1:50 to 3:30. It had rained earlier but the sun was just coming out as I pulled into town. A beautiful day at the beach. Parked in front of the 5 & Dime. Wandered around town and looked at all of the fancy little cars on the street corners. Dropped a few bucks there for lunch, ice cream, and a few odds & ends at the 5 & 10.

I drove out on 94 through Benton Harbor. That section of BH looked like it had been deserted 10 years ago. St. Joseph's was struggling a bit more than I remember from a few years back. But it was still quite nice.

I'll try to hit the pie shop you recommended on Tuesday.

Any good bike shops in that area?

Yep, we were leaving for graduation around 2. It lasted until nearly 5. The five and dime is right across the street from the door to my office. Mine was the the one that included AARP on the door. There are two bike shops in Ann Arbor that I have been to. One is out off of Stadium close to where the famous deli is at. It's pretty nice.

Two Wheel Tango is the other. They are building a new store and may be open by now.

That open area between St. Joe and Benton Harbor is soon to be a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course, with resort hotels, homes, etc. Big plans.

Just south at New Buffalo is a HUGE Casino opening in August, so things are happening in the area.

I saw the door to your office then. I wandered up & down State three times, I enjoy walking in small towns, looking at the architecture, seeing what people have down with (and to) the buildings, watching the people on the street (lots of kids were playing with the little fancy cars). I like St Joseph's a lot and hope the town is prosperous. The afternoon view over the lake and with lighthouses in the foreground is certainly magnificent.

I read some of the local papers during lunch - lots of stories about how the low water levels of Lake Michigan were impacting the economy. And all of the lobbying efforts to get the Feds to dredge the shoreline. That's an interesting political question. What is the role of the Federal Government in such a scenario? Spend millions in tax dollars to protect industry, shipping, and recreational use? Or to not do so and lose hundreds of tax-paying jobs? It got me to thinking.

MichiganMike did me right.

I stopped at the Grand Traverse Pie Company, located right at Exit 169 on I-94 west of Ann Arbor. I purchased two slices and one mini-pie. Too much for my diet, but I still feel I exercised a measure of restraint, given all of the wonderful choices.

I ordered a slice of Peach and a slice of Blackberry Peach Cobbler, and got a mini-pie (about two slices in size) of their famous Cherry pie. When I opened the Peach, I found that they had made a mistake and given me Cherry Peach. As I was about 20 miles down the road, I didn't return it. But I wouldn't have anyway because it was delicious. So that was my lunch dessert.

Then after 8 hours of driving, I tried the Blackberry Peach, also delicious.

Will have to report on the Cherry pie tomorrow.

Thanks MM for a great tip!!
