Raam 2007

Do any other San Diego area BFers plan to be at the Oceanside Pier Sunday morning 10 June for the 0900 launch of the 2007 Race Across America? I plan to show up around 0830, probably on Capo #1.

That could be fun. I'll check with my people and get back to your people. Seriously -- how cool!

I love RAAM! I had a nephew that was part of the support for a team a few years ago, and have followed ever since. It is a totally amazing race! But no I won't be able to watch any of it live.

Time station 42 is just a few miles from my home. I haven't decided if I'll try to watch some of the riders coming through.

I got my Velonews today, and there was a large article about RAAM. What is amazing to me is how old most of the people are that enter this event.

Plutonium Pete Penseyres is 64 years young; his brother Jim is 60.

Team 60 is 58-63
Team Santa Baarbara Bank & Trust are mostly in the 60's--two youngsters at 49 & 59
Don Peters 70
Charles Gilbert 74
Eleanor Mark 65

Another fact that struck me is that most of the riders are from Texas and California. Very few riders in their 20's, except for a team or two.

So,,,,,,,,,,,the question is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

are us old phartts getting better and not older********************

David Jones is in my road club, SFVBC, and this is his second attempt at solo RAAM. Last year he had to quit after around 1500 miles with hyponatremia, not to mention tornados in the area. This year, at 61 he says he is better prepared.
Generally, only about half of the solo riders finish.
It costs a lot of money to do the race, not to mention time for training, time off work, etc. This is partly why there aren't more young people. I think older people deal with sleep deprivation better, too.
BTW George Vargas, AKA Vireo, is doing the race on a 2 man team partly funded by donations from BF members as Vireo and his girlfriend Brandy are regular posters on the SoCal regional forum.
Don't forget Jim Penseyres lost his lower leg in Viet Nam.

The San Diego Union-Tribune had a picture of him yesterday, misidentified as Pete.

I think Jim still holds the amputee record for a solo crossing. The Brothers Penseyres are great guys and two of my personal local heroes, along with Gordy Shields, who is in his upper 80s.

So, is anyone else going to be at the Oceanside Pier Sunday morning for the first wave launch (solos and 24-hour; teams leave Tuesday afternoon)? If you are, look for what will probably be the only red Capo road bike there.

I rode with Pete at the Solvang Century in 1989, (I think), when he was on the tandem with his wife. You couldn't ask for two nicer people. We stayed together for miles, chatting, with her teasing me for having trouble keeping up. Just before they dropped me for good, they told me they were on their second loop!!!!
I also saw Pete at the Great Western Bicycle Ralley, where he spoke and gave a slideshow about RAAM.
