Speaking of mountain bike shorts...

I didn't wear mine today. I wore, instead, a Very Cheap pair of cotton shorts, which couldn't have cost more than $6, over a pair of <gasp> conventional underwear.

Twenty mile ride.

What I noticed was these shorts didn't roll down my, um, slightly enlarged midsection like the fancy shmancy mountain bike shorts with the gel padding.

In fact, there was no discomfort whatsoever. The saddle felt the same as always.

Now, it's just one ride, but (and God help us if the Underwear Nazi is still around), I didn't see any advantages for the MTB shorts. In fact, what I wore was lighter. :p

OK. Fine. Whatever.

Tom Bombadil 06-12-07 08:52 PM

I expect very shortly to be reading about DG's "going commando" ride.

Where is the Underwear Nazi when he is sorely needed?

That's because your not wearing the mountain biking shorts when you're mountain biking. THE SHORTS KNOW!

Tom Bombadil 06-12-07 11:46 PM

The first step to "going commando" would be to wear only your cotton shorts.

But you could "do a Will" by buying a Brooks saddle, slathering your back side with baby oil, and then hop on.

Now that you have a road bike it's time to get some road specific shorts: Pearl Izumi 3D microsensor bike shorts.

Now you know why Bib Shorts are better. Especially for the more rotund amongst us. Now try those ordinary shorts with conventional underwear on a hot day. In fact do a longer ride with underwear and you might notice the difference.

Cycling shorts do not add comfort in the way of Padding- unless you get the thick roadie type with an inch or so of padding in them. Cycling shorts or liners wick away the sweat and do do not have seams that will always be in the wrong place.

Now stop being silly and get those Cycling specific shorts back on and save yourself a few sores in place that we definitely do not want a pic of.

freeranger 06-13-07 05:26 AM

Andiamo makes cycling specific underwear, with padding built into the underwear so that you can wear any shorts you want and still have some extra cushion between you and the saddle.

Listen to your body--it'll tell you what works.

I'm surprised Rooobay didn't throw you off....she deserves lycra:rolleyes:

I actually ride in a pair of women's boxer shorts when it's hot, nothing else (on the bottom). Same material as the guy's. I don't go very far, yet, though.

When I was buying the BMC earlier this week, the young man in the shop asked if I wore shorts or bibs. I immediately started laughing, then I had to explain the thread we had here. He was cracking up over the "plain brown wrapper" and "old 70's porn star" stuff.

I do some work in a nudist resort. There's a heavy ( i had to find the right adjective-big,no, large, no huge, no!) gentleman that rides laps naked. The visual isn't pretty. I still don't know what kind of bike he rides!

buelito 06-13-07 06:49 PM

DG- you might try shorts with a pad, but NOT a gel pad...the gel tends to bunch where your bones aren't...not very practical, yet they are the shorts most often found 'on sale'...you are much beeter off with a conventional chamois-- and I prefer bibs as well, but shorts are good too... You will notice the benefits of biking shorts in hot weather and longer distances... they were designed for this :)

I have the flipside to you DG - I have been doing the basics like you and have acquired a few sores along the way. A few weeks ago I dug out my MTB shorts and put them on. MUCH, much better - immediately put in an order for a few more pairs from Nashbar.

Did it dawn on you that maybe you,ve found the correct seat? With the right seat squishy diaper shorts are not needed.
Keep the undies. With the rotation of the peddles and your calf going up in baggy shorts....well....lets not show all our cards at once.
