Do any of you sing while you ride?

I ask because I've got a song on the brain and I've been singing it constantly while I ride. People are starting to look at me funny.

The song came to me like this: I was riding to work last Thursday and saw a man wearing a bright shirt with stripes the color of orange sherbet, with a tie to match. I thought "he looks like a dandy!" and then I thought of that 60's song "Today" by the New Christy Minstrels with the line "I'll be a dandy and I'll be a rover, you'll know who I am by the song that I sing..."

Now I can't stop singing it. Make it stop!

(I told this story to a friend who's 40 this weekend, and she'd never heard of the song. I felt old.)

I make up words to Kraftwerk's "Tour de France". And their "Robot" song.

If you want to rid your brain of that song (or any song) simply start singing It's a Small World. There isn't room in the brain for the original song once you've injested this one. It's guaranteed. Try it.

Yes! The song comes unbidden and seems to change every week or so. My students and I just finished presenting a Broadway review of old showtunes.....and the tune "Dancing Feet" from "42nd Street" won't leave my head-- at least its highly rhythmic. Before that, I think it was "Sympathy with the Devil". Who needs an iPod!

I always have a song in my head when I'm riding. On particularly long rides I tend to fall into Supertramps "Take the long way home"

If you have air left to sing with, you aren't riding fast enough

When I drive to a ride, I'm very careful what song I last listen to on the radio as I pull in. Sometimes, I will wait a few minutes and change channels to make sure I don't end up with "Smoke On The Water" or "Tiny Dancer" going in my head for the next 6 hours...

I made the mistake of taking the grandkids on this ride right before we left DisneyWorld. They sang this song all the way back to the hotel and up until they fell asleep

yeah, yeah, I know. But it's hard to go fast when there's a stop sign or stop light on every corner.

Avoid at all costs thinking of Herman's Hermits and "I'm Henry the Eighth I am, Henry the Eighth I am I am..."

Often use the I-Pod and once I feel that all I am going to disturb are the sheep- I sing along to it. Depends on what part of a ride but a lot of Blues on mine and Ideal for the hills. Listen to the words though and I'll feel like finding a truck and jumping under it.

I think this needs to be stopped. First we start talking about what songs we sing to ourselves, and then everyone names the most awfulest ear-worms in history. Someone's really going to get hurt this way.

But if you don't heed my advice, I sing "Roxanne" to myself:

Turn out the red light. Turn out the red light. Turn out the red light. Turn out the red light. Turn out the red light .....

Oh YEAH, baby!

No, seriously, I'm so bad that anything -and I mean ANYthing- can trigger a song in my head for hours.
A car horn, a passing radio, a snippet of conversation, a bird's song... if it reminds of something -and neural pathways are tricky little devils- I'm stuck with it until something else comes along. It's my blessing, it's my curese.

What's that guitar that you are playing in your Avatar??

I love to sing but I don't think that I sing when I ride. My mind pretty much goes blank. I do listen for cars coming up behind me or the sound of my tires on the road but I try not to think . . . . or sing. If something triggers a song it usually sticks for a long time and the ones that stick are usually the crappy ones from the 60's.
