God Bless America, Apple Pie and 4th of July

Hey all
Tomorrow is the Fourth of July and that is our celebration of Freedom from those across the pond.
I just wanted to tell everyone here to have a safe, sane and festive Fourth.
Go get some Apple Pie.
Steven

Um, perhaps you could restrict your comments to the Politics forum?

The thread title reminds me of the old Chevrolet commercial: "Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet."

The irony there is that hot dogs originated in Germany and apple pie in England. So if one is "as American as apple pie" then they aren't that American.

Much of our cultural heritage and roots as well as our hearts and our language are in England. Why, Stapfam and I are virtual cousins-- except he got the good looks.

p.s. i generally enjoy reading 50+ posts, but in your case, with your attitude and an off-topic comment, i think i'll employ:

Rather presumptuous of you to imply I am not proud of him. Yes, we (my wife and I) are proud of him, but worried too. And we do not agree with the policies that sent him there. To say so is my right as an American, for which I am glad and grateful. In fact, I'll go further: when one honestly disagrees with one's government it is one's duty as a free person to say so. That's the greatest thing about America and other true democracies, and what will get us through this rough patch if we don't sacrifice our freedoms to the expediencies of security and to irrational fear. Yes, I know many good men died in justifiable wars to make that freedom possible. I'm not naive.

For his part, my grandson sometimes has a hard time understanding why he's there; what the overall mission is besides the day to day missions. But as with all men in combat he feels the greatest responsibility to his buddies. He takes it day by day. He has seen friends die. He's had close calls himself (he's an MP escorting convoys, among other things). We worry what all this could do to him even if he is never physically wounded.

Now let us agree to disagree and enjoy the holiday. I do take the point (a bit late, admittedly) that maybe this thread was not the place for politics. Apologies. Let's have a burger and especially some pie, and enjoy the fireworks. (And work off the burgers and pie tomorrow on a good ride!)

Dennis Christopher, I hardly know you in your current pic. Have we all changed so much? Of course, putting in the kind of miles Dave would have put in over the years, we'd all look sort of wasted-- or is that called "aging".

An old fan of "Deadwood" here. Apparently Dennis C. played Bellgarde. Can't remember...is Bellgarde the Russian telegrapher?

Anyway, thanks RockyMtn..........I think.

** Wonder if Dennis C. still rides? Did he continue to ride after the film. I understand most of the principal cast still shows up for the Little 500. Maybe we should invite him to join BF. DeeGee has been chief celebrity long enough.

Just don't post any politically arousing opinions in BLUE (or, for balance, RED). It's never the content, it's the style that gets you in trouble.

I'm trying to imagine the Jeopardy question for which this would have been the correct answer.

Perhaps it was "What Al Franken might say at the Pearly Gates."

Did he actually do all the riding in the original movie? I do know that there were fake parts (like doing 60 mph behind the truck which was bad enough) but then they showed that he was in the small chain ring!

It's raining pretty hard here and it will likely cancel fireworks. That certainly doesn't dampen the feelings that I have for our wonderful country. The land of the free and home of the brave.

My understanding is that a local female hotshot rider did the athletic "stunt" riding while D.C. did the normal, close up street stuff.
