I Hit a Dog
Yep, Tuesday night right near the end of my nightly 10-miler, only about .5 miles from home, a little lap dog ran out from between two cars in a driveway and I caught his rear quarter with my front wheel. I never even saw it coming. Luckily I was just at the top of a hill and only doing about 9mph. He/she yelped, rolled over a couple times then got up and ran across the street. I managed to keep the bike upright, get unclipped and get a foot down before loosing control. My only injury was that the seat slammed into my butt as I was trying to get a foot down and brake at the same time.
The funny thing was that the people across the street, who were out in their yard were like "poor doggie, why couldn't you stop in time". The owner OTOH was apologizing like crazy because her kids let the dog out of the back gate and asked if I was OK.
It was a tense few seconds.

Appropriate response to such a comment: "For the same reason you didn't leap in front of me, swoop up the poor little thing and lift it out of harms way." This, of course with a smile on your face. Gald you weren't hurt, and it sounds like the dog will be OK too. I hate these kinds of experiences, because, as you describe they are tense, and I really like dogs.

Scary situation! Not your fault that the dog was in the road to begin with, but of course you don't want to hit it, and could have been badly injured trying to avoid it. Happy that it wasn't any worse for both of you.

I'm glad that neither of you was seriously injured... those things can happen very quickly and those little critters are really fast and appear out of nowhere.

Wow! You must've felt just awful there for a second until the little guy scurried off. Glad it turned out OK
One correction, though... anything under 40 lbs is not technically a dog (unless it's a doxie or a Jack Russell... ok, maybe Australian Shepherds, too)

Ran over a small dog almost 30 years ago - the old Hercules 3-sp kept going forward and the dog scurried back the direction it came from.

Many years ago, when I was wet behind the ears teenager, I was on my bicycle and a friend was on his Honda 50 scooter. We were going down the street to my house when a medium sized dog ran out into the street after us. I saw him first and quickly sped up to elude him. My friend did not see him coming til the last second. In trying to avoid him he wound up hitting him broadside. The dog went in between the front wheel and the frame, sending scooter, rider and dog crashing to the road. The dog jumped up, ran to his front yard and turned, barking furiously at my friend who lay in the street with a broken scooter, broken arm and road rash. The dog was unhurt and the owner came out and chastised my friend for hitting his dog. Some people.

Just be glad it was a small dog, a friend of mine hit a rather large Lab mix, trashed his bike, broke his collarbone and wrist. The dog was fine.

I'm glad your OK. There's not much you can do in those instances, just try to get through it as best you can. I'll bet that dog doesn't chase or run after bikes again.
