To buy or not to buy... Help Wanted quickly!!!!
I am looking at a making a stab at road biking. I have a hybrid that I like to ride the rails to trails and the country roads, but I have the desire to try road biking, but I don't want to spend a bunch of money to see if I am serious---yet. I found a nice 2001 Trek 1000 in my size with only 300 miles on it. Looks like new, and is all original. The one thing that I am kind of reserved on making this purchase is the red wheels that are on it. It makes the bike look "different", but it is a very clean bike and really looks "patriotic". Maybe the bike might be worth something more than what I think. I can buy this bike for less than about $350, so I won't have a bunch invested. Is the color combo something that would be too different and make me stand out as a rookie? What are your thoughts on this bike----Would it make a good starter bike? Your speedy input is appreciated, as this bike may sell quickly!

Trek 1000 have during several of the previous years received honors as the best entry level road bike in the country. 300 miles is very low, and the price is fair.

Hard to go wrong. If you buy it, ride it and decide you don't like it or want to upgrade, you can probably sell it at a profit.

Trek 1000 is a good entry level road bike. I don't like the colors but that is just my opinion. You can change the bar tape but you will be stuck with red wheels as changing wheels would probably cost you as much as the bike.

It's a good deal. You don't like it, you can flip it.

Since you are on the "Fifty Plus' forum I have to ask if this bike's geometry will be ok for you. I started with a Trek 1200, (pretty much the same bike), but found the geometry was a bit agressive for me.
If that is not an issue, it is a pretty good bike.
Good luck.

Good deal and if you end up not liking it you should be able to sell it for what you're paying for it.

Why worry about it. If you really like road riding, you will probably trade up & sell the Trek. Or, you can upgrade the wheels if you like the bike otherwise. Nice wheels are a great add to any bike. bk

No one will judge you on, or care about, the color of the wheels.

Good way to get into road biking is to buy a good road bike- Cheap. I did this about a year ago and it did take me a bit of time to adjust to the new bike and the riding. That Trek seems a steal and is better than the Bike I started with. And as to the wheels- What make of Hub and rims?- how many spokes? etc. Can't tell if they are an upgrade to OM or if they are original. Either way it does not matter as It will be a good bike to get started with. Just make the wallet a bit thicker if you think you are going to enjoy Road Riding.

Here's the scoop. I stopped by the friendly Trek dealer (where I purchased my Navigator) and he said I needed a 60cm frame on the 1000. He also said that the 2001 1000 for anything less than $400 would be a deal if it was a decent bike. So I drove two hours to Michigan to look at the bike and I was really surprised.
The guy went through a divorce in 2001 and bought the bike to "help mend" his mind. He had the LBS install a Cateye computer, Nex lights and an air pump. He rode it for a few months and put a grand total of 226 miles on it when "his knee hurt" and hung it in the garage--- where it remained for the next 5+ years.
The bike had 5 years of dust, but was in wonderful condition. We aired the tires and I went for a spin around his addition. Pretty smooth for not being operated for years. He wanted $400 as advertised in Craigslist-- I pulled out $300 and he said "enjoy the bike!!!!"
So I have the bike on my stand getting ready to do a major clean, wax & lube session. Thanks again for the advice on the purchase. I will post some pictures after I am ready to reveal the Red, white & blue beauty!

You cannot go wrong buying a road bike - it's a whole different experience. You got a great deal.
I sold a 60cm AL/CF frame I built up as a 9 speed this spring that had fire-truck read aero rims for $925. While rims are usually black, silver, or old-penny brown anodized, other colors are not that rare.
