    The $10,000 handshake (off topic)

Tomorrow morning my wife and I are leaving for vacation. While we're gone a contractor is going to install some new floors in our condo. He delivered the hardwood today so it can get acclimated to our house. I asked him when he made the delivery if he needed a deposit or partial payment or anything. Both the contractor and the materials supplier are good with waiting until the installation is complete.

One of my favorite sayings is "There is nobody more suspicious than a thief." If that's true, these guys exude honesty.

We had 5/8 solid Oak floors installed in my last residence and loved them. Like granite counters they completely change the look of your room. Have a great vacation!

    Enjoy the vacation

I had hardwood floors installed in my house last fall and I love them. No more running that noisy vacuum cleaner....just run a dust mop over them.

You'll love the change. We went from carpet to hardwood about a year ago. Feels like a wonderful new house.

Did a kitchen remodel and living room floor refinish in 2000 the kitchen has maple and the living room is douglas fir the house is 102 years old so thats what they used here in the pacific northwest. I would never have hardwood floors in a kitchen again I paid a bloody fortune for it and after 7 years those floors look like they are 20 years old. The finish was supposed to be the best according to several sources. This floor was put in and then finished then finished on site and the guy that did it was supposed to be the best around again accornding to several sources. they had to come back an redo the living room and the kitchen this time with better results. After 7 years the old Doug fir looks like a million bucks even though its softer than the maple. If we live long enough I'm gonna put vinyl over that *&^%$ maple YRMV

I built our home in 1996 & put 3/4" red oak everywhere including the kitchen & bathrooms. Finish was a product called "Daly's Floor Fin". We were told to expect to refinish in 6-7 years but the floors still look good with only the kitchen beginning to show a bit of wear.

If there's still time to talk to the contractor before you leave, be *sure* you and he have the same understanding of the details. It can be a shock to come back to boards laid the wrong direction.
