Cross training for cycling

I just returned from a fantastic 5-day backpacking trek into the Sierra Nevada just west of Lake Tahoe. The elevation gains carrying a 45-lb pack were certainly made much easier by my frequent cycling. Legs, lungs and cardio -- I needed them all on this challenging hike at around 8,000'. By the way, I think I convinced my 50+ backpacking buddy to take up cycling. He plans to go shopping for a mountain bike this week! Looks like we may have caught another one!!
