The Red Shark rides again
I haven't been riding the tandem much for the past year or more since my son and wife both now enjoy riding their own bikes. But my wife decided that she wants us to ride it this Saturday when the club has a social ride. After pumping up the tires and making a few minor adjustments, I was surprised how well everything seemed to work after the extended hibernation. I convinced my son to hop on and join me for a 10 mile test run. It was funny to see how much seat post was exposed now for him to fit. Two years ago I had to push the seat to its lowest position and it barely fit him. It was also amazing how much more leg power he has now than when we rode the tandem together frequently in 2005. We didn't ride up any major hills, but a few decent inclines were a lot easier than I remember them being before. We managed to get it up to 32 mph on a long flat section and it tracked straight and true. I'm looking forward to riding it with the Mrs. Saturday. Hopefully the boy will want to go for a longer ride after she rides. I also hope she decides it was fun enough to continue riding it with me occasionally. I miss us riding together at my pace.
No new pictures from today, but here is one of me and the boy just before our first 25 mile ride in March 2005.

DAMN! You make me want one for Lovey and me. Are those things crazy money or fairly reasonable? If we had one, I think the chances are good she might actually ride more with me....

Couple of starter ones to be had and KHS and Raleigh do very good starter tandems. Mind you - as they go up in quality- the prices jump quite a bit.
Offroad forms I know- but some nice ones here.

Contact Red rider about the raleigh Tandem.
And some cheaper ones but in £'s

We bought a tandem this year and we love it. The only bad thing is that we have some really nice bikes that are not getting the rides they deserve because we spend all our time on the tandem.

Did you have to beat those guys up to make them let you play with them?

The two on the ends I had to house and feed since they were babies, buy their instruments, pay for their lessons and drag them across the state on tandems and beg and guilt them into it. The drummer volunteered.

That's nice, that you have the chance to enjoy your kids before they fly the coup. I bet that bike is steel.

We had a lot of fun that night. It was the talent show on the 2005 Bicycle Ride Across Georgia. My two boys and a friend's son backed me up as I sang a rewritten version of Muddy Waters' "Hoochie Coochie Man" that we called "Sweaty Cycling Man".
My wife told me
just after my ride
Go get in the shower
Smells like something has died
The dogs are complaining
and the cat as well
and the neighbors just called
asking what the heck's that smell?
But you know I'm here
Everybody knows I'm here
I'm that sweaty cycling man
Everybody knows I'm here

We took the Red Shark out for a 35 mile ride this morning with the club. Suddenly I remembered how hard it is to ride tandems up hills.
My wife opted for a shorter ride on her cruiser, so it was the boy and me on the tandem for the whole ride. We had fun. He is definitely more help than he was 2 1/2 years ago when we started riding it together.

Those are great photos! Good for you, for getting out with your kids, and what a blessing that they ride with you.
