Is there a forum anywhere for new riders?

I'd like a place to ask questions, get support, and meet other new riders. Is there such a place anywhere?

Many of the 50+ folks post here because they have returned to cycling after long layoffs or are new to cycling as a form of exercise.

You are welcome to be here. We are the mostly common sense crowd more interested in what works rather than what is fashonable. (just don't ask about white bikes).

Quick answers:

--bib shorts.
--clipless pedals.
--white bikes.
--Chocolate gateaux.
--Vinokurov.

I'm afraid you'll have to supply your own questions, though.

You forgot the most important answer.

PIE!

Welcome AuntieM. I think that there isn't a forum for new riders, because they so quickly go past that point and wish to dive in deeper into the subject. Plenty of friendly folks here. You'll find that we also hang around in other forums as well. Don't be afraid to ask a question.

The question that "pie" is the answer for is "What is the official food of the 50+ forum." Look at the thread on "Pie Ride" for an idea about that.

Auntie M - assuming you are a woman... look at teamestrogen.com. It is basically a women's only forum, very newbie friendly as many of the women have come in as new riders.

The idea is to con her into staying, BCI, not drive her away! We have jerseys to sell!

Doesn't matter how much riding you've done, if you're not finding things you know nothing about, you're not trying very hard. In other words, we're all novices, just in different areas. At least here, everyone recognises that and is willing to help out. And if you're really lucky, you get help from someone who knows what he's talking about

Auntie, if you want to ask questions and get knowledgable, helpful answers, this is a great place. We have very experienced folks, some who are just returning to biking after up to 30 years (like me a few years ago), and others who never rode much at all. We're also friendly, not always the case elsewhere!!

If you want to meet only with other newbies, this is probably not the place. I'd recommend hanging around with us for a while, and find a beginner's forum, too. But I don't really know where that might be.

We're supportive 'cuz we figure you're gonna be a riding buddy someday!

More quick answers

--biking skorts
--toe clips
--colored bikes
--Brooks B-17 saddle
--Chocolate Outrage energy gel

Seriously, though, when I was starting back riding after about 20 years, this is where I asked all my questions. You could probably do a search under my name in this forum and see there wasn't much I wasn't confused about. Um, make that present tense.

But this is about the best place I found for beginner stuff, and usually there's other people wondering the same thing-- like why do bike tires go flat so fast?

Yep, we taught her how to hacksaw her handlebar off and ride no-handed all the time. Check out her avatar...we did good.

I think this is it - we are all so old and senile we can't remember our last ride (even if it was yesterday) and so we think we just started all over again.

Once again, this is a very good place to ask questions, but if you want another place to try, try this http://forums.roadbikereview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=98
Please, oh gods of the Bike Forums, do not forever banish me for posting this.

So true. I did a n - 1 this week but made up for it with a n + 2 today. The sale will pay for a new set of wheels so I won't have to swap wheels between the Miyata and Fuji.
