It really IS worth spending the money on Pearl Izumi stuff. I have shorts, jerseys and gloves. Love them all.

PI just never worked for me....and it not really what is wrong with shorts...bibs are just great. I have not bought reg shorts in years.

I have a bunch of old Descente clothing, and it's the "best of breed" of 15 years ago. This year when I got back into cycling, I discovered that my quads had atrophied to where I needed new shorts. I got some Pearl Izumi shorts and they are outstanding. As an aside, I bought a size smaller for my first pair. After almost 3 months of riding and finding some fitness, I bought another pair at the same size as my old ones. My quads have expanded so that they all fit now, but the new ones are so much nicer. I bet the new Descente shorts are really nice as well. They cost a lot more.

Once you try bibs you will never go back. The only time regular shorts win out is when it is so darn hot you just don't want that extra layer the top of the bibs put in.

Pearl Izumi does make nice clothing. But, most major manufacturers have lines that are just as good. I have ridden in PI, Louis Garneau, Santini, Castelli and Demarchi. Liked them all. Bibs are preferable for me as they don't ride down like shorts do. Trick is to get ones that fit. The other tip is that once you find ones that do fit, wait till the "new and improved" version comes out of your preferred brand and buy the previously excellent ones at half the price!

PIs are Ok not my favorite for the price. I have recently moved up to Castelli and will probably try Assos next. I find that trying to be cheap on cycling clothing does not pay off, better made more comfortable clothing is worth the extra bucks.

Or, if you don't want to wait, try the Voler bibs from Hammer Nutrition--$44.95 for a very high quality bib with a great chamois. I'm not crazy about having a big logo on my bibs, but for the price of the bibs I'm fine with it. Plus, with mine I got a nice selection of samples of Hammer's gels, etc.--pretty unbeatable deal in my book.

Knew I was going to have a difficult "Butt" ride this weekend as I haven't done much on the Tandem this year and Even less on the rough stuff. So I wore the only pair of Thick padded shorts that I have. Thats- right- In a bib's posting I wore shorts. No Butt problem and the shorts felt OK- Today- The stomach feels tight and I have a Sore- band all round my body. I have worn bibs for so long now- that I forgot how uncomfortable that waist band can be after a few hours of riding.
Now if you like the PI bibs- You have got to try their cycling shirts- Only ever had one of them and it was a few years ago but they are unbelievable.

Gary, I was checking out a Specialized Roubaix at the LBS today. I have to hand it to you, when the chips were down, you really went first class. A few more bucks for shorts? Who cares. Nice ride guy. Oh, and I take back all that guff I gave you about being cheap. bk

But I am cheap...takes me a long time to pull the trigger. But now that I have a nice bike, it's easier to talk myself into nice gear to go with it, one purchase at a time. Next up are replacement shoes. I tell you what, though...riding a good bike in a good pair of bib shorts with a nice wicking jersey is sure a good feeling!

Yep, Card has nailed it (back in the Dark Ages that would have been a kind of cleat attachment double entendre!). Riding clipless for the first time will be another revelatory experience like that first ride in bibs (assuming you don't fall over--I didn't).
