Yeah, I'm already working on how to break it to my wife that I told my pal at the LBS to place an order for one of these just as soon as the prices on the 2007 models drop after Interbike when everyone goes gaga over the revised 2008 model.

"I sacrificed so much withstanding that season of MTB racing so that I would qualify for a team bike purchase. I wouldn't want to waste that on a low end bike. Yeah, I know I said that a hardtail with a Thudbuster was all I needed, but the pain in my back during the races showed that I was wrong about that."
I wonder if I can parlay that line into justification for racing again next year so I can finagle my way into one of these this time next year.

That or: "Honey, I've been thinking about starting running the bars again, but maybe one of these new bikes would be a better idea."

It's funny, but since I've brought home the Roubaix about a thousand miles ago, I haven't felt any N+1 urges. I'm sure they'll come with time, but so far, hasn't happened.

I thought briefly about picking up some kind of bike for errands, shopping, etc. until I realized I already have the Cypress for that. So I have to satisfy my need to spend money on cycling by purchasing clothes and accessories!

An interesting observation is that it appears that 90 percent of the Roubaix roadies are stocked with 50x34 cranks. Even when going to their website ... their "Ruby Expert Triple" shows that it is stocked with 50x34 chainrings. Why would the Ruby Expert be called a Triple if it comes with Double chainrings?

BluesDawg, you still experimenting with 50x34 doubles? I want to remember you trying the double crankset about a year ago on your roadie, and figured that the 30-40-50 triple works better for you, because of the duplicate ratios?

Must be an error on the info page. A friend recently bought a Ruby Expert triple and id did come with a triple.

I am trying a 50x36 on my Bridgestone now and playing around with different cassettes to see if something will work for me. But I may yet go back to the triple. The problem is finding the right range and the right spacing with a 7 speed. On a new bike with a 10 speed rear, I have no problem coming up with a combination that works.

<edit>another note. If I were to buy the Roubaix compact, it would be the bike I used for fast rides and rides from flat to moderately hilly terrain or very athletic rides in hilly terrain. I would definitely go back to a triple on the Bridgestone and continue to use it for more relaxed pace rides.

That is odd...they have it right on the Roubaix Expert Triple, but wrong on the Ruby.

For myself, I see no new bikes on the horizon, except possibly a mountain bike for son #2, who now stands 6'2" and needs a big frame. I have infected son #1 with the disease: his apartment balcony now holds his girlfriend's bike; the Peugeot PKN-10 road bike I gave him two years ago; the Specialized HardRock mountain bike I bought for him 10 years ago; and his new Cannondale Rush mountain bike, a graduation present from me.

I bought the bike out of my bank account with my money and did not have a murmour out of the wife- Then she took me shopping and I spent more on her new pool out of my account with my money.

Don't worry about the screaming and shouting that may go on at the time of a new bike purchase- The wife will get her own back.

Well sure, a lot of problems go away when you have a bunch of money at your disposal. At least that's what I've heard.

Not a great deal of disposable income but Mortgage nearly paid for- Kids left home- Only drink when someone else pays and a wife that works. All I have to do is survive. and I have worked all my life to be able to do that. So untill I retire in 4 years Time- I can get the things That I need. And get them before I have to cut back on expenditure.
