Way OT: Need a gift idea

I hope I don't make anyone mad by asking a way-OT question that has nothing to do with bikes... but I don't know who else to ask in person and time is running out.

We are good friends with our neighbors. Their son is graduating from the sheriff's academy next weekend after many grueling weeks of training. Working in law enforcement has been his life-long dream. We will be attending the graduation (my father is retired LAPD so this is nearer and dearer to my heart than it would be for most people) and would like to give him a meaningful gift. Sure, a check or gift card is nice. But, I'd like to give something that is a physical keepsake to mark this momentous event.

Any suggestions from someone who might also work in this field? Sterling silver handcuffs? I'm stumped.

Ask someone who has been there. In your place I'd walk into the local police station and ask the officers there what they would have liked to receive when they graduated. I imagine it would be like one of my relatives buying a cycling thing for me. I know what I want and need in the biking field better then anyone else. Best that they ask my wife. And get something not cycling related. If I had to make a guess get him a certificate good for one full formal police uniform suitable for dress occasions, payable when he knows which force he will join. Like dress blues in the US Army. Not a common issue item.

Ken, thank you for your thoughtful and meaningful response.

I was hoping that perhaps someone here may be a sheriff and or knows one and would have first-hand knowledge from experience. We will also ask his dad for ideas.

Yen, I took the liberty of smacking myself upside the head for my flippant response, to save you the trouble. I actually have no ideas for you, so I will just wish you luck.

Even though I ride with a policeman on the Tandem- We both try to stop thinking about Law Enforcement when we are out on rides. I did ask Stuart and all he could think of was a pair of waterproof socks. Nothing to do with Police work- It is just that I have a pair I rave about and he has got fed up with cold feet on the rides.

I have no idea.

Go ask at the station what brands of shoes they like the most, then get him a gift certificate at a shop that sells some of those brands, or maybe the uniform shop he might go to. His job requires good footwear. If his feet feel good at the end of the day, he'll remember you every time he takes those shoes off.

When my brother in law was a new Police officer I gave him a "Police" knife with the words Police right on it. He loved it. It was a folding knife that can easily be opened with one hand, has a belt clip on one side so it will be secure and has a serrated blade that will quickly cut a seat belt in an emergency. It's more of an emergency tool, not a weapon. This link is almost like the one I bought and is labeled as a "rescue" knife, to give the idea that is is usefull in rescue or emergency situations. Most policemen would love something like this. There are others than actually have "police" or militay insignias, but this is a very practical design. And it's a "rescue" knife. Google "police knife" for other ideas. I spent a lot of time selling knives to and listening to police and military people, this is a handy knife.

It can be opened with one hand (either hand) easily. Like in a car accident to cut a seat belt to get out.
And other small things a knife is used for.

Edit: I found the Police knife I bought ! It says Police right on it!!
try this one. You can get this engraved.

Check out this videohttps://video.google.com/videoplay?do...arch&plindex=0. It's not really cop-specific, but I think this is a cool gift for anyone.

Guider Police LED Flashlight, Cree 2 or 4 mode. Small rechargeable duty light.

If you are interested in a duty light gift
CPF Forums would be good place to ask for more info.
