Sounds like a good place for windy riding training, although maybe not at this time of year.

I'm thinking about doing the Cycle Wyoming ride there in July. It starts and finishes in Cody. How are the winds in that part of Wyoming in July?

Winds not as bad as here, but watch out for the HEAT. The Big Horn Basin (where a bunch of your riding wil be) is often over 100F at that time of the year and even Cody can be in the upper 90's. That 9900 ft climbing day may well be very hard, especially if the heat is up and the wind is out of the west (rushing down off the Yellowstone Plateau).

Amber puts on a great event. Better be online and ready to register right when it opens. Last year it filled up in a day. If you have any extra time, make sure you go to the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody.

NO trees here outside of town until you get to the mountains. The only howling you hear is the wind.

Awesome! Thanks! I actually spent a summer working on a ranch in Big Horn, but that was MANY years ago and I don't remember a lot, except for things like playing pool at the Big Horn Trail saloon and the town festival held at the volunteer fire hall to mark Big Horn's 100th anniversary.

Just so I'm clear, you were in Big Horn, Wyoming? That is actually on the east side of the Bighorn Mountains. The ride this year is west of the Bighorns where it is drier (well all of Wyoming is dry but the Bighorn basin is very dry - Greybull gets only 6.8 inches precip per year) and hotter.

Yes, indeed, Big Horn, Wyoming, 20 miles or so outside of Sheridan. I remember that summer being very hot. Heat I'm okay with--we get plenty of it here in Central Washington, so hot summer rides don't bother me. Wind I'm more ambivalent about. By the way, are there goatheads (thistle weed) around Cody and vicinity?

I was up there a moth ago but did not go for a ride. I did walk the loop at the Heart Mtn Japanese internment camp and did not see any along the paved path. Man that is a truly sad place for most who are students of WWII history. Made me ashamed of those Americans who did that to dedicated U.S. citizens.

I love the sock....must find a way to visit your area. If the winds die down there and you miss the breeze, put some serious lead in your panniers and come ride our little Tehachapi mountains here in the southern Sierra's.

1. Casper is windier ( supposedly has the highest suicide rate of any town its size in the U.S. - possibly due to the wind). Arlington (40 miles from Laramie) is windier than Casper.
2. I have driven in the Tehachapi's and yes they are rugged. But the summers are so nice here, I think I will stay put.
3. Crappy is a good descriptor.

I am close friends with several co-workers who were interned. Two voluntarily enlisted in the army, one was drafted from his camp in Idaho and one was allowed to attend college at Gonzaga in Eastern Washington but not allowed West of the Cascade mountains. Baffling that men like FDR & Earl Warren were among those who made the internment decision.
