I've been wearing them for years and years--hell, I was married when I started wearing them and that was in the dark ages and I still have some of those socks. Now I'll have bad memories every time I put on a pair of the older socks.

+1 to that! Wool socks all year round, summer and winter I say. Plus, if you act now, you can get some nice wool socks at Target for about $7. They only sell them in the winter and they only come in 2 colors but I've found them every bit as good as the Smartwool ones for 1/2 the price. Wool, wool, wool. It isn't made from oil, it doesn't make you stink, you can wear it more than one day, it lasts a looong time and it just plain feels good. Who could ask for more?

I just bought a new pair of Smartwool hiking socks to replace my ten year old pair. (Sierra Trading Post $7.95) The original pair is still serviceable but my lab chewed a couple of holes in one 5-6 years ago and they are finally get so big as to be embarassing to wear. The socks still keep my feet worm though.

+1 on Smartwool. I wear the upper and lower all winter, and I don't want to take them off ever, well hardly ever, as the wife apprciates me taking them off on occasion.

Also, the smartwoll socks are the best foot oder fighters I have ever had. Cotton or blend socks make my feet smeel like death. Woll socks cure that.

Oooo. Me like. I wear gray cotton T's in the summer like it's a trademark. This would work for winter.

(My wife keeps saying, "why do you wear gray with everything? it doesn't go with kahki, or brown, or white, or anything dressy...." but all I hear is "blah blah blah wear gray with everything blah blah blah blah...")

I just paid $70.00 for a "Jones" long sleeve wool base layer, and tried it out on a ride last night! Wonderful, comfy and warm. Cold ride too; low 50's deg.F.

That's quite similar to what I've got. Just got back from another really short ride, in between rainstorms here with the weather in the mid-50's. I felt quite warm with just the shirt and the 50+ jersey. Oh, and arm warmers and leg warmers.

I have long ago learned to recognize the symptoms of climate-envy. The slings and arrows of outrageous taunts flung in my direction never bother me. I just hold on to a dimming memory of shoveling snow, and feel better immediately.

Roight . . . (as they say in the U.K.), "cold" is a relative term (no reflection on anyone's relatives) and when I first moved here (from MO), 50 was "warm." Now, however, after 11 years in CA I'm all wussed out and 50 deg.F feels cold!

What? There's no reason for me to experience "climate envy!" Why, right now it is up to 26 and the sun is shining. The sidewalks in front of my workplace don't even have ice on them! A beautiful day.

Of course, there is the matter of my driveway having a sheet of ice on it, and my Acura Integra is under about 8" of snow. And tomorrow is my big Christmas shopping day & it might get up to 20.

Did I mention how much I hate Californians?
