I wanna go back.....

Our local PBS Station is holding another fund raiser this week.
They're airing a Dylan special. Oh the memories. I want to go back
and do it all again, not different (though I should) just again.

Yeah, I've had that thought a time or two.

Now I just tell myself to try to make each year one that I would like to experience again.

I wouldn't go back again unless I could put in less time in cars and more on a bike -- and I spent several of them years in a town* where the hills and the winters could get pretty gnarly.

If we live long enough, a lot of us will probably look back on THIS year as one we'd be glad to go back to...

Nope, not me. I like looking forward to see how where I was affects where I'm going. If I do the "shoulda, woulda, coulda" dance I'd never get to appreciate what's right in front of me. There's a reason why I live in the moment and plan for tomorrow.

PBS just wants your money, and they'll play on your sentiments to that end. I've caved once, about 10 years ago. Now when I send money it's not during fundraising -- I want them to know that their techniques don't work on everyone.

Color me sentimental but I would love to go back and spend even one day with my four daughters when they were 8, 6, 4 & 2. I suspect a lot of parents would want to do the same.

As to the here and now, I would love to take a year off of work and enjoy life while my health is good. Then I could go back to work refreshed and put in some productive years before retirement. Like many others, I have some nagging health issues that will likely be of greater concern by the time I hit 60+. I sure wish this was an easier thing to pull off.

I'd do it again in a heartbeat. What a ride so far. Not easy or pain free, but interesting for certain.

I remember during the period that the Dylan documentary covers, our family was staying at a motel in Oceanside, CA, near the Pendelton Marine Base. A bunch of Marines were in the motel one night, raising hell. Much to my surprise, my father didn't get upset. He said, "Those guys are probably shipping out to Vietnam. Let 'em have their fun."

Later that night, one of them jumped off the top of the motel, killing himself. The next day we learned those Marines were shipping out that afternoon, and the guy was so terrified he decided to end it right then and there. It would have been his second tour of duty in S.E. Asia.

I love Dylan's music, but I wouldn't want to go back to that period again. All I could think about on the drive home from that "vacation" was how few years there were left before I came of draft age, and why should I bother to take school or anything else seriously?

That experience really colored my outlook on life. I never had a career path, even though I was a straight A student and never got in a lick of trouble. I just couldn't bear to think too far ahead...and that attitude stuck with me my entire life.

If I could just do the good parts and not even remember the bad I would love to do it again but even at this distance the pain of the bad is too much. No thanks.

I'd go back. I'd go forward. I'd go sideways. I'd go across the universe in my yellow submarine. Being, baby, being, that's what it's all about. Now, I'll hop on my green-blue-electric yellow paisly pony and ride captain ride.

...to the islands,
where the shrimp boats tie up to the pilins'
gimme oysters and beer, everyday of the year
And I'll feel fine, I'll feel fine...
I wanna be there
wanna go down and lie beside the sea there,
With a tin cup for a chalice, fill it up with good red wine,
And I'll be chewing on a honeysuckle vine...

I'd only go back if I could take my current brain with me. Go back unconsciously and start over -- no way!

go buy a Dylan anthology and listen/reminiscence, but just remember that even Dylan has moved on.
Do a Jimi experience while you are at it. Joplin beerfest?

I don't know about that...this is what he said in his tune Highlands, from the late 90's...

Feel like a prisoner in a world of mystery
I wish someone would come
And push back the clock for me

All the young men with their young women looking so good
Well, I'd trade places with any of them
In a minute, if I could

New Yorker cartoon: Two guys hanging out on a couch. One says, "If you could be any Bob Dylan, which Bob Dylan would you be?"

I have had a happy life and have lost several wonderful people, so yes, I'd love to go back and visit my past--as long as I could avoid the heartbreaks and my own crimes and misdemeanors. I'd love to see my two sons as little boys again. And all the friends and family. What a wonderful thought! Thank you for bring ing it up.

Looking back, lots of good times, quite a few bad times, many mistakes, but I am in a good place now, maybe better than i should be considering some of the mistakes.
