Sunset getting later

Due to the tilt of the Earth and its elliptical orbit around the Sun, we have passed the point of the earliest sunset for most of the USA. Sunrises will continue to get later until early January. The shortest solar day, i.e. the length of time between sunrise and sunset, occurs on the Winter Solstice.

But to those who pine for longer afternoons, take heart, the system has finally turned in our favor. Tomorrow's sunset will be a few seconds later than today's.

I love DST and would support longer shifts and maybe two hour shifts.

I thought I was the only person who knew that.

Tom is right, and so are you. While we have now had our latest sunset, we have to wait until early January for our latest sunrise. The days continue to get shorter until about the 21st, which is approximately half way between.

Yes but you have this glorious long summer days. Here it's dark at 8:30 during the summer. Up there not until 10 or so. So stop complaining!

Here, we're in the Season of Perpetual Gloom™. Since I need my lights on at noon, it's hard to tell that sunset is at 16:36 instead of last week's 16:35.

As one who jogs home from work around 4:30 p.m., I am very sensitive to the time of sunset around midwinter's day (solstice), and I have indeed noticed that the sunsets are slowly getting later.

Nice thought, except that few believe Jesus was born on this date and the reason why it is celebrated at the Winter Solstice was an attempt to pre-empt existing pagan Roman festivals, like Saturnalia and Natalis Solis Invicti.

Of course one could pick this date as easily as any other date to celebrate Christmas, as there is no credible information as to the actual birth date.

Really, the day the sun shone last week I slept..night shift. I can't remember the last time I
experienced sunshine...just the continual grey sky, not even any discernable clouds !!! Grey, grey, grey....

We are nearly into our shortest daylight in a day with it is still being dark at 8am and being dark by 4pm. I am right on the south coast but the further north you go and there will be less daylight hours. That is only over a distance of around 600 miles so how you lot get on I do not know.

All I am waiting for is the summer nights where as the sun goes down at 10pm- the Full moon takes over and you can continue to ride until sunrise about 5 hours later. Now that is a day worth having in the year. Last Time I attempted it- We had evening mist and couldn't see a thing.

P.S. Santa is having a hard time this year over here- Only been asked to be Santa at two school fetes this year. Don't do it so I pass them onto Stuart- my Tandem Co-pilot as he has his own Santa Outfit.

At this time of year I like to celebrate the Flying Spaghetti Monster (more at https://www.venganza.org/)
and morn the decline of pirates. Makes as much sense as anything else....

I know that a Pagan ceremony was chosen for the celebrating of christmas but even this date has changed- Not the 25th December but the Calender was out by I believe 11 days so when the Calendar was changed- all dates moved. Believe this was Before the USA was Discovered so perhaps not many of you can remember the riots in Europe at losing 11 days of theit life- Tom Probably can find it with his vast knowledge base but Just remember that Christms has changed once- and That is why Santa has his miscreants list- He lost out on 11 days preparation so is missing a few pressies still.

The correction of the errors in the Julian Calendar to changing over to the Gregorian calendar took place at different times in different countries. Some made the adjustment in 1582, others in 1700 (and other dates), England did it in 1752. Russia didn't change until 1918.
