Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!

Snowing, windy, wind chill of -5. It was raining at midnight, then temps plunged, leaving roads (& trees) covered in ice.

Definitely no riding ... except on my new recumbent trainer.

For here, it isn't all that of a rare event. This happens a few times every winter. Air temp is 14 which really isn't that bad, but the 30 mph winds are nasty.

Yesterday it was 37, that felt warm & toasty. Wore a light jacket.

A few years ago we were hit with a Canadian cold front and the lows ranged from -26 to -29 F (about -33 C). It is hard to describe this cold to someone who has never felt anything like it. -28 F is 60 degrees below freezing point.

I had a chance to experience a 100 degree temperature drop. I was in a building that was 72 and it was -28 outside. So I walked in and out 4 times, without a coat on, just to feel the change.

So compared to those days, this isn't bad. But compared to it being 55-60 & sunny, it isn't much fun.

DG - That's totally UNFAIR - pics of Hotel Del and the Silver Strand beach. Many moons ago, I used to live in Imperial Beach.
Finally, the PNW got decent snow and days off to ski the mountains.

It does make for a pretty picture, but I never did like driving on ice.

Right now in Miami its 80 with a light breeze. I have all of the windows open, sitting in shorts and a tee shirt drinking a beer and watching the Dolphins get demolished by the Pats. Really I think you should listen to your relatives Tom, I gave up winter 15 years ago and have not missed it since.

It was 36 degrees with 45 mph winds today, so I decided to stay inside and watch the BENGALS BEAT THE BROWNS!!! WHO-DEY!!!

(Actually, yesterday it was 60 with 17 mph winds gusting to 21 mph, so I rode 20 miles.)

Yesterday was in the 40's with 40 mph winds. Went for an 11 mile ride
only because I couldn't let the balmy weather go to waste.
What a treat it was to ride on bare pavement again. Today it's in
the 20's with 40 mph wind gusts and it's snowing so hard I can
barely see across the street.

I might start riding the Airdyne in the basement again. Sigh.

It's been a nice winter in MN so far. Highs usually in the 20's...lots of snow. A winter from the 70's.

We have (or used to have) a week in January where the temp drops to 20-30 below each night and doesn't get above 0 during the day.

That's a long week.

But I'd rather be up here, where we're experienced and we don't have issues with things like frozen pipes than be in KS where they're not really set up for bad weather. They had the same snow and wind in KS a few days ago, and people had to abandon their cars in Wichita.

There you go blaming Canada again. Well, most of our snow is from storms from the US mid-west. I haven't been on either bike since Dec 10, thanks to your storms. How can I get my bikes out of this back yard?

Heard on the radio this morning that parts of the US are getting some unseasonally cold weather right now. Don't know if its true but we normally get what you discard- about a week later. So when do I get the studded tyres on the MTB?

Woke up this morning and checked the thermometer on my balcony. Checked it twice, in fact. Yep, 82 degrees, no wind.

Sigh.

No trainer for me...again!

Hadn't taken the van out of the garage for a couple of days, so I had to clear off the drivement. The winds had cleared off about 90% of it, leaving only a 4' wide 30" high drift across the middle. I decided that I needed the exercise, since I haven't been riding, so instead of using the snowblower, I got out my shovel.

I was taking it easy, skimming off only moderately deep shovel fulls, and was nearly done when, unbeknownest to me, the edge of my shovel went until a lip of ice. I heaved up on it and instead of a few pounds of snow, I was trying to lift a hundred pounds of ice. Out goes the back muscles, down goes the Tom.

I struggled up to my feet, used the show shovel as a crutch and hobbled into the house. Took a couple of ibuprofen and am on my easy chair, using my computer. Can't stand up yet. When this happens, about 3/4ths of the time I am okay within a couple of hours, and about 1/4th of the time, cannot walk for 3-5 days. Don't know which this one is yet.

At least we are having a white Christmas.

Ouch! I hope it's just one of those that heals in a couple hours.

I gave up yard work and shoveling snow a few years ago. I own a double and my youngest daughter gets a rent break for taking over these chores.

We're not going to have a white Christmas this year....just cold and windy

Big disappointment on the "daughters home for Christmas" front too. Three of the five won't be here. This will be the first time that we will have less than 4 here.

Looks like this won't go down as one of my better Christmas's. Oh well.

I think I'd have to agree with them! I love brats, but hate cold weather. I visited a friend in Madison one winter and it was about 40 below.

Six hours later ... can't walk without using a cane. Darn it! Nothing serious, just pulled muscles that will heal ... in a few days. One careless swing of the snow shovel.

Tom is bummed out.

So sorry, Tom! You'll have to spend more time gazing at bike catalogues for a while! Heal quick!
