A big milestone today
It's still lovely riding weather here in sunny Florida, and today I planned an 81-miler from home to the beach and back, twice. I did 36 and flatted out without a spare, but it was OK because two of my girls were leaving to go visit boyfriends before going back to college, and it made more sense to spend time at home with them than on the road.
Those 36 miles put me at 4,117 for the year, which is a nice number, but more importantly it put me at 5,016 since 7/19/06, the day of my last chemo session. I've whined a few times in this forum about my colon cancer and I'll not bore you again with the details. Suffice it to say that I've read a few studies that show a strong negative correlation between exercise and colon cancer recurrence, so I ride in part out of a fear of a long slow, painful death if the cancer comes back. I'm proud to have done over 5k since finishing chemo, and if I survive it will be in large part because of my bike. You guys also make it more fun too, given that there are only a few folks around here to ride with, and I've learned a lot from all of you. I wish all of you a very happy New Year.
