Cannondale oh Cannondale.

Dorel Industries, parent company of Pacific Bicycles is reported to have purchased Cannondale. Eh?

Edit: Actually reported first in the Road Forum yesterday.

There will be more acquistions by Dorel. Consolidation is the name of the game on Wall Street. Jeff Frehner is an attorney who heads up the company, mergers and acquistions type guy. Can you guess who's next?

Well, it least, for now, they're still Made In The USA........the frames, anyway, at least most of them.....and some of the bits and pieces..........Does this mean I have to remove the American flag decal on my '94 H300 frame? Anybody got any little matching Canadian flag decals? In the spirit of international cooperation.

I've had two LBS's tell me in the past couple of months that Cannondale was now having a much higher percentage of their frames made in Asia. Haven't confirmed this yet, but both were knowledgeable bike guys who didn't seem to be grinding an ax.

Apparently this is a sister company to Pacific Cycles, but headed by the ex-Pacific Cycles prez. I have seen a stronger commitment to producing high quality bikes after this guy took over Pacific. So Cannondale's overall quality may not be endangered. But I would not be surprised to see more of their production move to Asia.

It would appear that for the present, Cannondale will continue to be a high end bike company selling its products through the LBS while the Pacific Cycles division will aim at the mass market.

And most Cannondale frames are presently made in Asia (including the high end CF frames as the Asian factories seem to have invested highly in the best technology in the CF world) (but then so are most of the high end Italian and French frames.)

It would appear that if you want a US---- Or UK- manufactured frame- you will have to look at some of the Custom frame makers that are around. Here in the UK- even they are going under fast but still a few low volume producers around- still making some of the best frames in the world. Haven't found a custom builter in C.F yet but then I don't want to- But heard that the compny that built my custom MTB frame in the late 90's- and was just about to fold- Is now going great as Riders find the benefit of a "Quality" product over a mass produced.

I wonder what bike company is up next for Dorel to purchase. They have stated that they are not yet done acquiring bike companies.

Raleigh USA?
Felt?
Electra?
Jamis?
Kona?

If you can buy up Cannondale, then you can go after most of the companies out there. They can't get Trek and I doubt they can afford Specialized. Giant is a question mark. Not sure anyone else is off the table.
